Author Daniel Silva, whose popular fictional character Gabriel Allon is an Israeli intelligence office, is worried that the current unrest in Egypt could become "an absolutely catastrophic failed state civil war," that could ultimately end up increasing Israel's isolation in the Middle East.
Silva's new book The English Girl is the 13th in his best-selling Gabriel Allon series, but it wasn't always supposed to be that way.
"He was never intended to be a continuing character," Silva said. "In fact, when I started making the notes on that book, he wasn't even the main character and then he just sort of took over that book."
He says that developing Gabriel Allon has been an "organic process," and he plans to continue the series with a new Allon novel next year.
