All this turned out to be was an infomercial for President Obama - no serious journalism involved. Not one hard question, no fact checking, every word, pause, gesture and smile was practiced, rehearsed and designed for our "benevolent leader" to patronize what he considers the unintelligent American citizen. What at waste of air time.
What I'm reading here are a lot of disgruntled Republicans unhappy about Gregory painting Obama in a good light. I'll agree that Gregory is a poor interviewer, but that's besides the point. The middle class is waiting to hear this high minded argument on why 98% of Americans shouldn't get a tax break. And I want one Republican writing in these columns to explain why , when we have the lowest tax rates since 1955, the "supply side" and "job creators" aren't using their huge tax breaks to create jobs. GE paid zero in tax!Warren Buffett, Bill gates, and many other billionaires have called for a tax increase on the wealthy to help create revenue, yet the GOP refuses to compromise on anything. The so called Tea Party is destroying what is left of the GOP. The GOP will be blamed for going over the cliff, that is very clear from every poll taken. In 2014 many TP people will themselves be " primaried" out.
Great question: "why aren't the job creators using their tax breaks to create jobs?" I think all of us have this thing completely wrong. Neither the government or wealthy individuals create jobs. People create jobs from all backgrounds and there are good and bad environments for job creation to happen. It takes money to invest in new and existing businesses. Entrepeneurs will risk their money when they see opportunity. When the environment exists for them to succeed, they will risk. When it doesn't they won't. Tax rates are just one aspect. Regulatory certainty is another. Spending confidence is another. Just as there are cycles in life, one thing is certain, there are business cycle where we do great and where we suck depending on many factors. When we start pointing the finger and looking for someone else to act in order to correct the problem is when we are in trouble. Most of the politicians today are survivors and unfortunately Wall Street, the unions and other lobbying entities are linked to the survivors regardless of their party affiliation. When we clean house, hold our politicians accountable and decide that we have more in common then not we will succeed again. But while we continue our current path we will not. It takes leadership on all sides which is something we are sadly lacking across party lines.
harschwarz, I vote Republican and guess what? I think everybody should pay the same tax rate. Why shouldn't everyone pay their FAIR share? (Their true FAIR share, not the contrived fair share concept put forth by Obama. Why should nearly 50% of Americans not pay toward the services they receive? That is not fair!
I believe that David Gregory's assessment that the anti-gun faction is "common sense" and that gun owners are a "highly organized" group is false. This is a self-serving view that blesses his own position and demonizes gun owners. Tom Brokaw's suggestion about forming "gun clubs" where semi-auto rifles would be available has tremendous implications which the "common sense" group seems oblivious to. This recommendation would require confiscating about a million rifles from legal owners and setting up severe penalties for anyone not complying. The TV media and Washington seem content to ignore that fact that there are millions of responsible shooters, you are acting out of emotion and not reason in trying to deal with gun related crime.
David Gregory you are a poor excuse for a reporter. All you did in the Obama interview was serve up lobs. When he claimed to reduce the budget in 2011 by $1trillion the next question for a real reporter would have been, "If you reduced the budget by $1 trillion why did the deficit increase?" That is the question discerning people had.
Instead you asked the only half-way challenging question that as the President isn't your job to demonstrate the leadership to resolve the Fiscal Cliff crisis? Look at the tape. Your body language was apologetic for asking a half-way challenging question.
David, step back from the story and take your personal political leanings out of the interview if you want to become a REAL reporter.
David Gregory, as I watch Meet the Press I have noticed on a regular basis that during your round table discussions, often missing from your discussion is diversity. I mean there are no Hispanics or Black representation. I would like to know is this diliberate? When discussing any issue there needs to be a diverse idea or opionion to the discussion. When I see your round table today discussing President Obama's next 4 years, what can your contributers discuss about diverse issues in the Black and Hispanic Communities and what the President will or will not do?
This was nothing more than another attempt by Mr Obama to say, democrats are good and republicans are not! He is the most partisan POLITICIAN we have had in office of President in my lifetime (over 60 years). I have not yet heard anything new in these "fiscal" talks. This President and this Congress are incapable of getting anything done for the American people, for whom they supposedly work. It is time for term limits on Congress! It is time for the career politicians to go!
Tom Brokaw says that people making $250K aren't rich because they may have 2 kids in college and be supporting a parent. Just so you know, people making $50K or even less, can have 2 kids in college and be supporting a parent as well. If you were faced with this situation, which income would you rather have?
We have and should value the diversity of demographic groups in the US including moderately successful families. While it may seem preposterous to many, household incomes of $250,000 are barely adequate for successful middle-class+ people with children living in urban environments like NYC. All kinds of special expenses kick-in: very high rents or coop fees, parking fees, school fees, and food costs-that people in their income peer group do not have to pay. Many leave urban situations because of these costs. For those that remain in the $250,000 to $400,000 range, an increased tax will be a burden.
Amazing that Pres Obama can sit there and lie about everything with a straight face. He has no understanding of a free market society, economics, job creation or how to deal with a budget (don't spend more than you have). He is bent on destroying our free market economy with his socialist/communist agenda.
Agree with Michael W above, career politicians must go and Congress needs to learn to get their work done.
Like many ignorant TP people, JRSeeley has no idea what socialism or communism even means. Socialism: national parks, progressive tax system, medicare, social security, farm and oil subsidies, the EPA, the FDA, public transportation agencies. Obama didn't start these programs. they've been in place for quite a while. Communism? if we were in a Communist state ,JRSeeley, you wouldn't be writing this blog criticizing the president..you would be in prison. Why don't you read once in a while instead of listening to FOX news as your educational source.
-Brokaw should have asked if the 'common sense' comment applied to him. So short-sighted to say that one side has all the common sense
-Remain personally offended that the parents weren't even allowed to grieve before the political avalanche on gun control began
-Would love to know if NBC ever reads and then posts these comments
-NBC bias continues, in a smug, elitist manner. Not journalism -- force feeding
-As a legal gun owner without a criminal record who lived in California when the first assault weapons ban was enacted, I would recommend to all my fellow citizens to read the fine print. Brokaw mentioned that 'they' were already looking for ways around what might be coming. I AM one of 'them' and all I would like to see is someone actually define an assault weapon and have a little bit of insight that 'former' military weapons shouldn't automatically (irony) be defined as an assault weapon. Why? Do just a bit of research on the Brown Bess up to the M98 Mauser.
-You can't legislate sanity, and with a Congress and Administration (regardless of party) who have place this country in our current financial straits --- I DO NOT trust them to come up with anything other than feel-good legislation.
-NRA Wayne just made the group look more out of touch. The NRA didn't kill anyone and didn't put a gun in the hands of Adam Lanza. Instead of looking for a scapegoat, I want to know what went wrong with this young man and who the adults were who didn't intervene.
I was a bit disappointed with David Gregory's interview with President Obama. He, like others in the media, failed to call the President on his views that meaningful cuts can be made to the deficit while growing the economy at the same time. How can the economy grow if taxes are raised and government spending is cut in a meaninful way? The President mentioned shared sacrifice, yet he doesn't want the middle class to share in that sacrifice by raising their taxes. That is NOT shared sacrifice.
Everyone but the top 10% or so had their income go up dramatically while the bottom 90% got almost all the income increase of the last 30 years. The bottom has sacrificed income so it could go to the top. It's time the richest sacrificed.
David the question you failed to ask goes something like this:
"Mr. President, the Republicans have offered to meet you somwhere in the middle on tax increases for the rich, and tax cuts for the middle class. In exchange, what SPECIFIC targeted cost cuts are you willing to put on the table?"
Follow up when he hedges:
"Mr. President, the American people want to know what targeted cost cuts you would want to see in a deal with the Republicans. What SPECIFICALLY would you want to cut?"
No mention of raising income limits to $250K to secure Social Security for a fair fix instead of raising the age of retirement? Tax shy again. And no mention of raising the federal minimum wage as a means to reduce poverty. American supports these ideas too. More than you realize.
Not one of the narrow minded jackasses on the set today mentiontioned raising the social security payroll tax cap! Brokaw thinks we should all work longer! Screw him and MSNBC too!!!
Not one of the narrow minded fools present on the set today had the sense to mention raising the social security payroll tax cap which stands at $106,000. Brokaw thinks we should work longer?!?! Screw Brokaw and MSNBC too!!!
This was a great roundtable - no political hacks spouting party lines. Not like the usual roundtables of the past few years. Thoughtful, in-the-know people, adding in the historical perspective from DKG, made this a pleasure to watch. Keep the politicos on the first portion of the program and keep the roundtable as a true meeting of minds.
When David asked President Obama what he thought about armed guards in schools, he said he didn't care to speculate. It seems he wouldn't have to. Both he and David Gregory have decided to have their children in a school with armed security guards at Sidwell. Must be good for them.
Tom Brokaw for Congress! His comments on meet the press today were spot on. President Obama was disingenuous as usual. Again playing politics rather than speaking facts and substance. He continues to talk about taxing millionaires and billionaires, yet wants to balance the budget on the backs of the upper middle class. Instead of attacking this group, why doesnt he align his actions with his words and go after the loopholes benefiting the super rich
Lets talk real money, if you are getting in NYC $405 in unemployment and that check is not available Friday Jan 4 you will not be going to the grocery store. If your ($700 after taxes) paycheck comes in Friday Jan 4 and is now $679 you cannot buy that monthly transportation card that just went up from 104 to 112. But what do those politicians dems and reps whose Friday Jan 4 paycheck went from @$2,500 ($150,000 per year) to $2,360. and one more thing the NRA suggested after Conn we put armed guards in every school, well a few days ago firefighters were lured to a fire and shot at shall we give them armed guards also and then who else...
As usual, Mr. Obama lied to the American people in this interview. His personal goal is to bring down the republic and reinvent it in his own ideology; and redistribute everyone's economic wealth. All presidential decisions are made with that objective in mind. His second term is going to be filled with crises which Mr. Obama himself creates and enjoys because he will not "let a good crisis go to waste". Unfortunately, the average American, who has been dumbed down in public schools for the last fifty years, and who may be one of the 32% who are dependent on handouts from the federal government, is unable to understand the issues --- probably just wants some more free stuff.
And the dumbed down is...envelope please... the southern states! Highest illiteracy rate in America. Highest amount of federal aid to education in the U.S. And the ironic thing Mr. Duck, a high percentage of the voters in the south voted for guess who..? I'll give you a hint. It wasn't the President. So when you have the GOP southerners all disdaining federal welfare...their states get most of it. Miss, Ala, LA, WV, Tenn. Ky, Ark, SC. So we tax payors in the blue states pay our taxes to those states that can't earn enough state taxes to survive.
Mr. Gregory's question asking the President "what is it that the Republican's dislike about him" was rhetorical, hopefully? Otherwise, the comment would be inane in light of the Republican's unyielding tax position and commitment to Grover Norquist's blood oath. And, if inane or not, it was certain nasty, belittling the President, without any reality behind it. Gregory not up to par for a MTP moderator. Miss Lawrence Spivak.
President Obama defended Ambassador Rice stating that Ms. Rice had been unfairly criticized regarding the Benghazi incident since she was one least knowledgeable of the details. A great follow-up question would have been--- "If that were the case, why was she chosen to be the administration's spokesman." Could it be "plausible deniability?" Could it be that more knowledgeable and savvy officials were not be willing to compromise their standing with the administration or American people? Could it be that Amb. Rice was so green as to not realize the harm she was doing to her reputation? If she was, should she had ever been considered for Sec. of State?
Nice to see that most of Howdy Doody's viewers and commenters are just as right-winged as he and most of his guest commentators. This is why I usually don't watch this show. Here's a question for the two Davids, Tom and Mr. Milktoast Meacham, "Why do you people not recognize or comment on the disparity of earnings that has occurred since the Bush Taxcuts took affect. Some CEO used them as an opportunity to increase their annual salaries to $20+ million, while reducing some working class wages by half. Ya'll are nothin' but a bunch of rich white guys sitting around, patting yourselves on the back while trying to sound intellectual. OMG....isn't that what you accused Obama of during his first term. Sounding like a teacher and not connecting with the common man. It seems November 6th shows how much he connected with the common man, since your ilk obviously didn't vote for him.
You are spot on. When Rice showed up on those shows, I thought why are they sending out the JV team when we need to hear from the Varsity?
Where was Biden?
Where was Clinton?
Where was Penetta?
Obama gets mad when she is critized, but he sent her out, then he said she didn't have anything to do with it. Then why wasmshemsentnout ther? I think Tom has the answer.
I watched meet the press this A.M. I was appalled at the disrespect being displayed. The judgment of you or Chuck Todd really doesn't amount to much. Mr. Gregory commenting on the Presidents attitude. The best they could do was talk about how he preformed on Meet the Press. Really gentlemen. What would you rather see? A calm leader. He does not want people to panic. I guess you rather see him scared with his hair on fire. I would like to see you do any better. What would you do? The whole country is looking to you to get us out of the Bush admin. missteps. What would you do? Aren't you glad you don't have to make those decisions? I am glad I don't have to. I believe everything this President has done, has been with the hope of making our country more secure. As far as fiscal cliff goes what a bunch of nonsense. All the country is being brain washed. The congress would love for you to believe that the debt is the basis for? all our woes. Why? Are people all of a sudden not going to pay anymore taxes. When I hear statements such as there are people who would rather punish their children by wanting to spend all the money on themselves. What a disgrace you are. No one wants to spend the money. We the People must get assistance for our children. The same money you say we are taking away our children's future. Stealing! Well if we don't get help now there will be no future. You're right about making a future for our children. That's why the funding is cut for education. Then say it is for our children's future. Can't help the poor The congress hasn't any use for the working poor or the middle class. Oh and by the way our government can't help to make sure all of our children can have food. A place to call home. Supplies for school as well as a few clothes from the thrift store. Every decision we make opens up a whole new debate. Too bad it is about the same thing as always. Open your eyes America. Yes do think about our debt. Just remember there is more than one way to reach those goals. Invest in our children. Not hedge Funds.
We the people must impose term limits for Senators. I am Republican and I hate being one in 2012. I am sick and tired of Congress and the grid lock. The Congress are not "FOR THE PEOPLE" They are for their party first. These guys have the odacity to vote themselves a $900 pay raise while the rest of America are struggling. The House Speaker hates President Obama with a passion and it's so obvious. I know that there are "some" Congressmen who deep down in their soul they are prejudice let's not kid ouselves people Prejudice still exist between whites and blacks...(NO I am not black. I am white) The Speaker does not and is not willing to work with the President.
Let's get these old cronies OUT OF CONGRESS PEOPLE! No matter what new Senator goes to Congress with new hopes and inspiration to work for the PEOPLE..On his first week in Congress the old cronies tell this new aspiring Senator "This is the game...you vote the way we tell you and you do what we suggest to you or you're out! If this new Senator refuses...his term become black balled and he accomplishes nothing because the party ousts him.
KEEP THIS IN MIND PEOPLE...JUST LIKE THE PRESIDENT HAS TERM LIMITS SO SHOULD EVERY PUBLIC OFFICE IN THE US HAVE THEM ALSO.
Just think what a Senator makes besides his Congressional pay- Public Speaking (you would think if it's for the people- there should be no charge) Books, etc, etc, ect. TOO MUCH POWER these guys have. think about it. the president has to get their vote for any major chane and they are our framemakers. GREED has brought us to where we are now and if we have GREED in Congress then it's time to get them out. AMERICA is built on the middle class. the rich invest and build businesses but without the middle class and the low class their invest would go nowhere. THEY MUST PAY MORE TAXES and it should start with no pay increases for any govt agency exexutives including CONGRESS until we get on track!

Tom from BNA
I'll add to this...
