Executive Vice President and CEO of the National Rifle Association Wayne LaPierre fiercely defended his organization's response to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school and indicated that they would not support new federal gun regulations.
LaPierre was panned by critics this weekend following a press conference in which the NRA called for armed security officers in every U.S. school. He responded to critics this morning, "If it's crazy to call for putting police and armed security in our school to protect our children, then call me crazy." He added that the American people "think it's crazy not to do it."
The NRA chief also dismissed a bill in the works by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) that would renew the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004. "I think that is a phony piece of legislation and I do not think it will pass."
(Watch the wide-ranging, exclusive full interview with Wayne LaPierre here)
There was also news from Capitol Hill this morning as both Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) were unwilling to show any support for former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel, a name floated as a possible choice to succeed outgoing Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta at the Pentagon. Senator Graham said he would wait until the confirmation hearings to decide and Senator Schumer declined to comment until an official announcement was made.
As Andrea Mitchell pointed out on our roundtable: "If a Democratic Senator is not going to come to Chuck Hagel's defense, then I think there is serious problems there."

We'll be back next week. If it's Sunday, it's Meet the Press.

I think the media needs to ignore Wayne LaPierre. Stop giving him a platform to derail the discussion of much needed gun regulations.
Wasn't he LtGov of Delaware or something ? We need to increase skilled gun ownership in America to deter NDAA attacks on Americans
To have good guys - police or volunteers skilled at schools would do more than prevent gun violence but all crimes against our children - bullying, drugs, preditors of children and assaults of all kinds within those grounds that happen everyday!!
"Increase gun ownership"? How many more guns and gun owners do we need to stop the killing? Many hundreds of people have died by gunshot since Sandy Hook - roughly 80 Americans each day - at what point do more guns make us safer?
What the heck is wrong with Wayne Lapierre, Did he forget FORT HOOD, There were tons of weapons/armed soldiers on the base..THAT DID NOT STOP THE SHOOTER, And the teenagers that have committed these mass shootings, were not considered Criminals, they were under the radar, with ACCESS TO GUNS WITH CLIPS and Drums..Guns are PART OF THE PROPLEM....
The personnel on Fort Hood were not armed. That is a policy of the military that came under discussion at the time. It too is a "Gun Free Zone"
Yes, that's what we need more laws that are not enforced. I swear Dave did not listen or is not capable of understanding (like Solidad who's mind is constantly "boggled"by facts). Mr LaPierre stated that we should prosecute the people who break the laws already in place. David did not seem to be interested in that because in his mind, like most of the media, is on unarming the law abiding citizen. (except the ones who protect politicians) Once they start gun control they won't stop untill they are all banned. That's how a government works. Just look at tobacco. And now that our govenment is envolved in health care you can watch how you will be denied treatment because you smoked.
There're maybe 10 million possibly more AR15s out there, 2.5 million 10 years old or newer, in America. The only AR15 shot at American school children is now in the custody of Connecticut police.
Sandy Hook's locked front door didn't work. Lanza shot up the glass. What's the point of a locked door next to a glass window?
Violent military killing style video games should be banned. Electronic toys are hipnotizing and desensitizing and have caused serious brain deficiencies in tens of millions of American youth in my opinion. Think about it. Who hasn't said, "Hello" to a kid who couldn't even take his eyes off of his gameboy?
this guy is been in his rubber room to long is definitely out of touch with 230 million people who do not belong to the nra
Follow the Money...right to NRA and gun/bullet manufactures. WHO is going to pay for cops/? in Every school in this Nation??? Do the States picjk it up? (more state tax's maybe) How about cutting Teachers in schools to pay for it? (like we are not overcrowded now) How about Parents?
Lets TAX/add fee's to Every gun sold at its point of Origin. Do the same with bullets. Make the macho DE macho gun lovers PAY..Put Up or Shut Up!
I can hear the cowards scream now. We need a real logical gun act. Don't take the guns that are deemed Legal..But do away with ALL assault type weapons. Any true hunter knows you do Not need a gun that can shoot 50 rounds in minutes.
Get real folks. Stop bowing to NRA. The same people who make Billions off of your stupidity
In 2000 Bill Clinton Wanted Cops in Schools Because of
Columbine
Even a majority of members in the NRA think there should be better gun laws.
LaPierre is out of touch with his own.

Excerpts:
...NRA Members Showing Strong Support For Common-Sense Gun Laws
Mayors Against Illegal Guns released the findings of a recent survey by GOP pollster Frank Luntz showing that NRA members and gun owners overwhelmingly support a variety of laws designed to keep firearms out of dangerous hands. The survey’s key findings include that 87 percent of NRA members agree that support for Second Amendment rights goes hand-in-hand with keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, and 74 percent of NRA members and 87 percent of non-NRA gun owners support requiring criminal background checks of anyone purchasing a gun.

Again another biased and poor display of so called journalism on the part of NBC and Mr Gregory, half the problem is the media and their frayed veiws. Talk about law and legislation yet breaks the law being in possession of an band illegal magazine. Bad people will committ and find ways around the law, right mr Gregory. Not to mention the amount of bad information that was reported after the tragic event in Conn. We could use the media as a valuble tool for educating yet it has become a platform for clearly biased agendas of the networks and their affiliations of parties. I am tired of a Lame Duck President sitting in Hawaii and congress going off to enjoy holidays paid for by taxpayers when we have large problems in this coun try from budget, gun control (not) to peolpe who cant afford health care (mental Illness) and party differences. Wake up America until we get rid of the life long politicians whom have been in office for decades these things are not going to change. Real change is left up to the people, American people not republicans and or democrates. We are our brothers keepers and we need to look after each other. If you are a parent and you are counting on this gov to protect your children its time to open your eyes, they dont care about the welfare of the country, or we would not be facing the cliffhangers and tragedies we have to endure because of party differences, ignorance and the arrogants of our leaders. Change needs to start at the top.
Well if a gun can load itself point and fire a round and kill someone all on its own then yes take them away ban them and destroy them all, but i dont beleave thats possible , if someone really wanted to hurt someone it doesnt take a gun to do it they could cover u in gas and light a match, before any one could put it out the extent of the burns would probably kill you so should we ban gas, lighters, matches its not going solve the fact that it takes some one that is wacked out enough to do these things and they are the problem we need to know who these mental people are in the community and be aware of there access to weapons not just guns, weapons are just tools used in the wrong manner its not the guns people.
I think you're dead-on about David Gregory, MChambers...
He would honestly be a better fit at FAUX Noise than with moderate, middle-of-the-road sorts at NBC...
Dear praysalot, the government already wastes FAR more money than it would cost to put an armed guard in every school. Obama is still insisting on higher taxes and an increase in the debt ceiling. In fact, he doesn't even want a debt ceiling. He wants to spend into oblivion. If you Liberals can waste money like that, you can find the money to pay armed security guards for the schools. Look at all the money that is being funneled into the TSA and how it is expanding into more areas of our society such as planes, trains, and even automobiles. Liberals can always find reasons for which to spend more money if they so desire.
galaxyJ: Mr. George W. Bush (Jr) started TWO wars, both unfunded. In other words he borrowed money from the Chinese to wage war on Iraq for no reason. I don't think President Obama wants to spend money we don't have. Raising taxes so the rich pay their fair share instead of the middle class - I can't argue with that.
Obama eliminated school security, left our children at risk, per article below.
http://www.washingtonguardian.com/washingtons-school-security-failure
I believe the media should just ignore Wayne LaPierre and the NRA. We've lived by the agenda of the NRA for 40+ years, which has resulted in 1.5 million dead Americans & 60+ mass shootings. Its not working for society as a whole.
Stop giving gun manufacturers a platform to derailing much needed gun regulations. They are addicted to profits & care not about the consequences.
Asking the NRA about sensible gun regulations is the same as asking a drug addict about sensible drug use. Its just not possible.
Agreed 100%. We see the same inane logic, fear mongering and scapegoating every time. They aren't concerned with the second amendment, they're in the gun sales business. Instead of reacting, it's time the media just ignore them the way they would a ranting lunatic.
The problem is your conclusion is contradicted. For example, Chicago and DC are "gun free" and rank #1 and #2 in gun deaths. Even at the height of the Gulf War, Washington DC had 4 times as many gun deaths as the US military in Iraq, per capita, and was "gun free".
Several major US cities have seen gun crimes decrease 80% upon implementation of open carry laws.
By the way, I got my NRA card 60 years ago. NRA has been around much longer than your report says.
scott...Proof??? You are living in the Past.
I don't make things up. The information is easily verifiable.
I'm not in favor of armed school guards at this point. The one AR15 used at Sandy Hook K-4 is in police custody.
There are about 15 million AR15s in service owned by private American citizens. Americans have been acquiring AR15s since 1959. There are about 200,000 new purchases by American citizens of AR15s each month. Only the ONE was used in the trajedy of Sandy Hook.
How many people died in car accidents during that same time? How many American babies were killed before they got out of the womb? Liberals do not really care about human life. They are hypocrites. If you are really concerned about human life, address these other issues, also.
galaxyJ: liberals care about babies, period. They care about human life. But bringing the abortion card into a discussion about guns is really off the wall. Most of us just don't want someone else telling us that we have to follow THEIR RELIGIOUS views. Not all religions feel the way you do. Who says I have to follow your view?
why all the sentimental irrational calls for disarming Americans ? The problem is clearly a gun nut mom trained her mentally ill son in shooting the guns he turned on her & his school of his childhood... what has that got to do with Patriots defending America with their duties found in the 2nd Amendment ? Pass a law requiring families of psychotic people to KEEP THEM AWAY FROM GUNS, that should apply to a few thousand gun owning families NOT THE MILLIONS who must not be disarmed 843-926-1750 @Greens926_1750 www.hireLarryFireBobby.com @VoteLarryDis114 Larry_Carter_Center@yahoo.com NBC must look into AIRPLANEgate & the nations most corrupt Speaker of all 49 statehouses Bobby Harrell stuffing millions into his own pocket NOT SETTLING ON 44.5 CENTS per mile travel to work like ALL OTHER LAWMAKERS IN SC

When You sign up...let us know...ya right!
After an attack of an interview Wayne LaPierre did a great job in trying to get the talk to be about the real issue at hand. Why won't reducing ammunition capcity help? Have you ever reloaded before? Even the inexperienced can do it in seconds. Those that have experience can do it in under half a second. So you are telling me that you would prefer to limit ammunition capacity. So while you are possibly delaying the shooter mere seconds and the police are responding you are saving how much time? In contrast to the idea of LaPierre having an armed guard to hold off the shooter until back up arrives. Do you have kids? Which scenario do you prefer? Also background checks. The Sandybrook shooter would have cleared a background check. So how is that any help in these particular cases? He had a 3 day waiting period to get the gun and so instead he killed to acquire one. Make more rules, in the end they will get the gun. Stop playing politics, this is the safety of our children. Taking protection from the already vulnerable only creates more targets. These shooters are cowards and target area's where the threat to them is the lowest. Let's not give them any more targets. Please, protect our children.
Yes, by all means, let's not delay a school shooter by "mere seconds" when he wants to mow down a room full of first graders. It might inconvenience a law-abiding gun owner who likes to fire off 30 rounds at once on a lazy Sunday afternoon on the range.
Chris4u, you are dealing with facts which Liberals can not process. If you want to persuade them to your side, you must use strong, emotionally-charged language.
Chris4u
You are aware that in the Tucson shooting, it was when the shooter had to change his extended magazine that the people could overpower him. Had he had a 15 shot magazine (came with the gun) instead of a 30 round magazine, maybe fewer people would have been killed or injured.
Yes, extended round clips are not really a necessity for sport shooting or hunting. I really have no problem with banning them. Make sure you get all the clips currently in the hands of outlaws, though.
But using emotionally charged language is not going to bring anyone around to your side. That's the problem with Congress; they do not know how to respect each others views. There are truths on both sides. Divisive screaming will not help anyone.
The problem with you, and other reporters/commentators/taking heads in the MSM, Mr. Gregory, is that you always treat even those who espouse the most delusional, paranoid, deranged views, such as Mr. La Pierre, as if they're simply representing yet another serious point of view, thus passively providing them with something approaching legitimacy. Granted, NBC and the other major broadcast networks are a far, far cry from so-called "Fox News," but in a way, what you do is even more insidious. At least Fox News openly takes sides with the most paranoid, delusional segment of our electorate, which is why no intelligent, sane, educated person thinks of them with anything but derision and scorn. You, on the other hand, by claiming (and sometimes doing a fair job of pretending) to be even-handed, draw an audience of people who, in at least some respects, are capable of rational thought. That makes the potential damage you can do by treating out and out psychotics as if they're sane, reasonable people, even greater.
Well said, Robert S - totally agree!
Additionally, David Gregory: you are no Tim Russert, not even close.
You need to go to Gallup.com. This guy is so delusional that 87% of a recent poll had a number 1 answer on how to protect our children as Armed Guards in the school. (Very Effective or somewhat effective) You are being lead by the nose to the slaughter and loving every minute of it. Get a brain and use it.
You sound kind of narcissistic. Couldn't you think a little higher of yourself? Giving all sectors of our society a chance to express themselves is wrong? Are you from China? Why are you Liberals always so against allowing people with dissenting views to be able to express them?
Pot calling the kettle black?
1 - Great job doing a tough interview, calling him on unanswered questions, good follow up - a thoroughly professionally tough interview. If LaPierre wasn't expecting that, then he is more of a loon than I already think (if possible).
2 - No serious person wants to ban all guns. I like reasonable traffic laws. That does not mean I want to ban all cars, nor do traffic laws inevitably portend the confiscation of cars.
Likewise traffic laws do not prevent collisions when people ignor them. The people that use gun to break the law are ignoring the law(s).
Old citizen
How many people does a car PLOW down at one time? How many children? how many movie goers? You sir are truly out to lunch.
If you seriously think a Traffic Accident can compare with these slaughters. That is total nonsense, and you know it!
Actually, it isn't nonsense, you just want to make it sound as though it is praysalot. Just as atheist and muslims want to scream that your are an idiot to believe in Jesus to make themselves sound more correct when all they have are their theory and beliefs with no real facts or "eye witness" testimony to what they believe in either.
There are documented cases of people using a vehicle as a weapon to kill others, not by accident. How much would it have taken for this same idiot to take a hummer or caddy and blast onto the playground at recess time and take out 40 or 50 kids in seconds, potentially getting away, yet this scenario is discussed in school safety preparedness and not defended against except by a chain link fence in most cases. Just because someone hasn't done it yet, doesn't mean they won't think of it.
The pistols and rifles that everyone gripes about are potentially the very least efficient firearms that these shooters could select. If they were really thinking, there are much better weapons for close quarters, high rate killings.
I think folks are seriously lacking big picture prospective on this. I see so many knee-jerk comments by people that just "know" their thoughts are the only right ones. Just like our government, too many extremist. Extremist don't solve problems, they cause them. There is absolutely no reason that guns can not exist in the hands of the citizenship.
I appreciate Mr. Gregory's tough questioning of Mr. LaPierre about the size of magazine clips this morning but he did not take the questioning far enough. When Mr. LaPierre stated that the NRA wanted to work with law enforcement to get the criminals off the streets and prosecuted, Mr. Gregory should have questioned him: why then does the NRA continues to oppose state legislation banning felons/former inmates from owning guns and why they continue to oppose micro-stamping of ammunition which would help law enforcement solve crimes faster. I think an opportunity was missed to reveal the NRA's true motives. Mr. LaPierre was given a pass this morning.
How can you Micro stamp ammunition and be affective when you can make a mold of a bullet round and reload your own. Get real 7522624, and even if they put a mag ban in effect ,what are you going to do with the millions that are out there ,and i dont think a five round mag would slow any one down when you could fit one in the gun and four more on you ,a five round mag of any sort will fit into any pocket on a pair of jeans because of its size .The ( NRA ) is a great org and i think they are on the right track, and 7522624 all guns can be tested and ballistic's are very accurite! Theres not a plan anywhere for anything that is 100% but i would rather be on the 51% side rather than the 49% side of anything. MR. LaPierre i back the NRA for what this country ( UNITED STATES ) was founded on, and for AMERICANS RIGHTS.
How is a law going to keep a former felon/inmate from owning a gun? It is amazing the number of people who think that a law has some innate power or ability to change what everybody is doing. Felons and former inmates were exactly felons and former inmates because the law wasn't able to stop them from doing what they wanted to do. The real problem is with those individuals who are determined to break laws, refusing to conform to what society deems as "appropriate behavior".
Mentally deranged persons, without the availability of a firearm, HAVE CAUSED just as much harm with a barred exit, a can of gasoline and a match. INSANE INDIVIDUALS HAVE ALWAYS FOUND A WAY TO HURT OTHERS. A NEW DEFENSE PLAN is something we need to implement in all of our schools. The NRA is willing to pay for a great deal of this. I am proud to be a Lifetime member.
Please, Cathy Whidden Solis, inquiring minds want to know about the last mass murder committed with "...a barred exit, a can of gasoline and a match[,]" in the continental United States within the last hundred years?
Cathy
Proof? I would love to see your source in the US.
Yea its Easy to think juck up and pass it off as fact.
Cathy: what would be your definition of "insanity," and how would you establish that someone is GOING to be violent, of they have no history of exhibiting violence?
Trained psychiatrists have struggled with this for many years.
Further, less than 5% of people with a diagnosed mental illness ever become violent. And people with mental illness are more than 10 times more likely to be VICTIMS of violence than people who are ostensibly "normal."
We need better mental health care in this country, for sure, but not as a solution to gun violence.
Maybe another statistic matters: Americans are only 5% of the world's population, but we own 50% of the world's guns.
And perhaps 95% of the world's freedom.
Well said Cuban Pete, if i wasnt for Americans with firearms, What would this World be like???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
If you Google Cathy's scenario, you will find news reports to that effect. She did not mention the United States in her post. She was only trying to make a point that it doesn't take a gun to cause the deaths of many people at one time. Though a mass murder is shocking, it still does not compare to the deaths caused by other means in the United States each year. The issue is not guns. The issue is what our society is doing with the mentally disturbed and those who insist on being violent criminals. Liberal policies have placed us all in a very dangerous society because these two issues are not allowed to be dealt with properly.
galaxyJ
Let's not talk about ".deaths caused by other means..." and keep the conversation real. Let's talk about deliberate, intentional taking of a life. How many murders are caused by someone who chooses an automobile as their weapon, or a knife, club, rock etc. The weapon of choice for murder is the gun. Yes, guns are the issue and just denying that does not change the facts.
KJNC has the best point. Yes, we know we need to keep guns out of the hands of whackos. I use the term advisedly. Many mentally ill people are law-abiding productive citizens. How do you know when someone is a whacko? I don't think there is any easy test to determine how deep a mental illness is. Or what a person might do. If ya'll can come up with a reasonable way to keep a whacko from getting a gun (or making a bomb, or setting a fire, etc) let me know. I'll sign that petition right now.
Curious, isn't it, how NRA fundies hate big gub'munt and claim they need firearms to rise up agin' it if it gets too uppity.
But they also love that same big gub'munt's military and all the fun firearms that it inspires?
liberals call gun control are hypocritical. You have a president (not mine) who rubs elbows with and does fund raising with hollywood who makes a posh living making violent movies, also hangs with JayZ who also makes a living singing about violence, the same president that calls for gun control because they are about violence. Which ones of them are used more in a day and has an influence with our kids? Movies and music. So I challenge Obama to publically come out and announce he is forming a committee on Hollywoods violence and Rap musics violence, lets see what kind of welcoming he would get from his friends then? He is owned by Hollywood and the liberal media. How popular would Obama be if they all turned on him for denouncing Hollywood? Obama would be let all alone with nobody like MSNBC to cover for his lack of doing a good job in the white house.
He's not your president Doug why because he's black? Your confederate rag flag is hiding behind the Red white and blue. Maybe what you should see is what the first responders saw at all these barbaric shootings. And then maybe you might agree with us Liberals GET RID OF ALL THE ASSULT WEAPONS AND MAGAZINES.
Let me summarize for the people.
Tony can't tell us how many african american youth were killed in 2011 due to gun violence, but 20 white kids die and now he cares.
Someone posts something that mirrors common sense dealing with society and a man who should be leading by example and Tony calls him racist.
Then he wonders why people dont agree with liberals.
Doug
You hatred for Obama adds Nothing to this conversation. Get over it.
A lot of things need to be looked at. But your Petty snips shows your lack of understanding of the Issue.
Netty Bo
Yes but the Majority do Agree with Liberals...get a Clue.
Mr Wayne LaPenuts and his "Can't shoot strait gang" of clowns are a embaresment to the civilized world. They are a perfict fit with the GOP and their cry-baby leader in the House of Reps. It's as though they tried to think of everything they could do to make people hate them and acted on their thoughts. These are the samepeople who created most of the massive debt we have and are tring to keep us there. They tell us we have enough money; we spend to much. The American people want the programs we have. If we need more revenue to pay for these programs INCREASE TAXES. This isn't a really complex problem. The american people spoke in the last election, get rid of the loop-holes in the tax code, increase taxes, spend the money wisely.
Now they are speaking out again. Get-rid of asult weapons and large magazines for all weapons. Maybe the GOP doesn't understand english. It is obvious they feel allied and beholding to Big Business and the very wealthy. Maybe the working people speak a dialect that unknown (DON'T GIVE LARGE CASH DONATIONS).
Tony M.D'Amato you are an idiot ,if that kid had a 22.LR the most popular gun there is he could have done just as much as the assault rifle the 22.LR with a tubular clip which is the most available gun, he could have pocketed over 1000 rounds and reloaded in secounds AGAIN ITS WHO"S HOLDING THE GUN. if he had a cheap $10 axe you think all of those kids would have made it NO it might not had be as bad but still ONE LIFE IS JUST AS BAD AS TWENTY.
Seeing Wayne La Pierre literally foaming at the mouth showed the underbelly of a rabid gun advocate. Watch the video. The NRA is on the losing side.
THE (NRA) IS AS STRONG AS THEY HAVE EVER BEEN . and they fund as many or more gun safty programs than our own GOVERNMENT, TWO WORDS FOR YA gladys SHUT UP.
The NRA is nothing more than a lobbyist for the gun manufacturers of this country, and will promote gun sales without regard for the consequences. I'm extremely disappointed to see MTP provide them with a platform, as though they are a credible organization willing to make a positive contribution to the gun control debate.
Peter Drier had it exactly right, "...the media should stop giving LaPierre -- a corporate lobbyist -- a free platform to espouse his predictable pronouncements."
A very socialist suggestion: wipe out the first ammendment en route to wiping out the second.
Well said Cuban Pete ooooooooooooooo Thats the first ammendment robert craig IDIOT.
Cuban Pete 1776, I made a similar comment. In addition to not wanting the American people to have guns and be able to defend themselves, Liberals also do NOT want dissenting viewpoints to have an opportunity to be publicly expressed. It is shocking the similarities between the Liberal agenda and the policies of despots that have wreaked havoc throughout the 20th century. Yet, the Liberals are so blinded as to these similarities and, even when being confronted with them, can NOT recognize them. This has to be some kind of psychological phenomenon.
galaxyJ: please get off the liberal/conservative thread. There are lots of liberals that own and enjoy guns, just as there are many conservatives. Your hatred is a distraction to the discussion.
No, the NRA speaks for many gun owners nationwide. On the other hand, Mr. LaPierre is not a spokesman for ME. NRA needs to find a much more articulate spokesperson.
LaPierre's suggeation for TRAINED guards makes better sence than limiting magazines.
Perhaps not making it so obvious that "This is a gun free area" might help as well.
At least with it being known that there are possibilities of being resisted the crazies will go somewhere they find less resistant to their endeavors.
CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP. now there you go a very smart Woman With some sence Great point PAT i value your statement.
I've spent most of my life in law enforcement with 28 years on the CHP. During those years I arrested hundreds of people for assorted crimes including carrying a concealed weapon without a permit & some were people that could not legally own a gun. Out of all those that I arrested I never went to trial on a single one for the concealed weapon charge. Not one out of the hundreds I arrested. They were all plea bargained out and were never punished for carrying a concealed weapon, in some cases they were given the gun back. Our liberal judges and VERY liberal media would scream if we violated some ex-con's rights or took away rights from criminals, even though they've already given up those rights by commiting a violent crime against law-abiding citizens. Back in the late 1800's every citizen either had a gun in their home or carried on. If someone shot an unarmed citizen or stole something of theirs, when they were caught they were taken out and hung. They didn't wait 20 or 30 years to hang them, they hung them the next day. Guess what? The crime rate went down, people stopped carrying weapons because the bad guy knew he would be punished and punished severly if he was caught. We just need to stop treating criminals like they have rights. They don't, they gave up those rights of their own free will.
Thank you for what you do, and your post.
In reality gun violence is partially caused by the people calling for more gun restrictions.
In the late 80s and mid 90s there was an attempt to enforce our gun laws. This caused alot of stress in the poor and minority neighborhoods. The race baiters came out saying we were putting way to many young african american males in prison. Al Sharpton claimed these laws were based on white people fears, those that lived in the suburbs. Liberal guilt kicked in, with a fear of being accused of racism, and the whole concept of gun enforcement folded like a house of cards.
To all those calling for more gun restrictions, if you are serious you will back...
1. Strict enforcement of current gun laws. Even if it pisses off the race baiters.
2. Locked hospitaliztion of those at extreme risk of harm to themselves or others, even if the ACLU has a heart attack over it.
3. Welcome half way houses, even in your own neighborhoods, for those on heavy phyciatric meds that need to be monitored. These people have an illness they didnt pick, they need our support.
4. A closed border, period. Drop the liberal crap about people who hate Mexicans or immigration. Large percentages of illegal weapons and drugs cross our border daily. This is a safety issue. Coincidentally it will also stop human trafficing (Thats a REAL war on women people)
If you arent going to back these ideas, then I assume you dont really want to do anything about gun violence. Your just the type to go after legal gun owners to make yourselves feel better.
And again someone with a good head on there shoulders _/ you got my VOTE!
It's laughabvle that gun nuts would calll people who favor regulation of eapons emotioimotionally driven. WHen what they are doing is responding to events in the world. WHat is reallly emotionallly driver (is refusing to respond to events in the real world. I have a gun I use to killl woodchucks, works goood for that. Notas goood as a bazoooka of course, but I'm content.
Nettybro: I'm feeling attacked. I am a registered independent with liberal leanings. I am also a gun owner, target shooter and hunter. Please stop blasting all liberals as ACLU peeps.
You do have some great ideas, such as enforcing the gun laws we already have. We really don't need more laws that aren't enforced. The locked hospitalization: again, how do you know someone is a danger? Is there any outward mark? Is there an established test? Truth is, we just don't know. I'm afraid that it could be used as a weapon (ex-wife, angry neighbor). Until there is some way to definitely know, I don't think we should start locking people up.
Armed guards are not going to stop drive by nut's from killing school kid's. Get rid of the assalt wepon's
And again someone that has no sence at all. IDIOT!!!
Getting rid of an assault weapon would not stop a drive by shooting. If you research this, I believe the facts that you will find available do demonstrate this.
The NRA has a plan that mirrors a Clinton program. That program lost its funding under the Obama administration. We tried the gun law approach, the AWB, and it had NO effect on crime. High-cap v. low-cap: a magazine change takes less than a second. And of course, if we are talking about a criminal or lunatic, the fact is that no law is going to impede them. FBI statistics prove that in the areas of high gun ownership, the crime rate is lowest. Areas with strict gun control have the highest incidence of gun crime. These are facts. You can argue based on your feelings all you want, but feelings are not facts. And as a law abiding gun owner, I am not in support of any new law that suddenly puts me into a criminal class.
BTW, where's the outrage: David is in violation of DC law by possession of a high capacity magazine. I guess special people don't need to follow the law!
Agreed. And as for David, he did disappoint me. In addition, his resistance to armed guards at schools is laughable. His kids go to the same school as the Obama children. The school has up to 11 guards on the grounds every day. Plus, because of the Obama girls, there is a secret service presence. A little hypocritical. When all the Congress and Executive and Judicial government gives up their armed guards and bullet-proof SUV's - then maybe they can talk.
It would seem that any type of TRAINED arm guard would at least give the crazies some second thoughts about entering an area where they might meet resistance.I am sure that a sign stating "gun free area" doesn't stop them.
Okay say we do have more police officers armed in the schools, let the NRA backup their idea with paying for this protection. Money that the school system could use and the local police force would not have to find in their budget. It seems that the NRA wields a lot of power for the 4 million plus members and that they are the most vocal about not banning assualt type weapons. I still believe until Bambi starts shhoting back at these so call sportsmen their should be no sales to private citizens of the assualt weapons.
Bambi can't shoot back, of course. But to get him on my dinner table I really must shoot him.
Mr Gregory, after watching your show this morning with the NRA idiot here is a question you brought to several host on your show "How do we get congress to go along with a change to the Assault Weapons. Just about everyone said congress would not take up that question.
Here is my answer. Every person in congress should be able to see pictures that the first responders saw of ALL these shootings.
That's it. After seeing the photos and nothing is done then let the American public see the photos.
Thank you for reading my comment

Tony
Great Idea. Make them SEE what was done.
Agree!!!
You three are WAY too eager to see pictures of dead children!
Tony M. D'Amato from the way you show your ignorance when you type makes me sick to my stomach . Tell your boyfriend i said shut up also.
You determine national policy by looking at a photo? Where is the critical thinking? All decisions that are made should be made using facts, and those facts should be as accurate as possible.
When will Liberals stop "thinking" with their emotions, and actually learn to use facts and their brain? I'm assuming they have a brain. Liberals desire policies and outcomes that satisfy their emotions rather than satisfying justice, freedom, liberty, and true equality.
Do you get as equally stirred up looking at photos of traffic accidents that were the result of a drunk driver? Does the fact that there are far more deaths resulting from drunk driving fire you up emotionally? What about the fact that there are over a million human babies killed every year in this country before they can get out of their mothers' wombs? Does looking at photos of murdered babies stir you emotionally?
I wouldn't want to ask too many questions and disturb you.
This issuse must be address and we must get a handle on gun control . N.R.A don't give a dam about us , about controlling guns in our city until one of their kids get caught up in a mass shooting . That's when they will listen and that's when LaPierre (hopefully) will stop forming at the mouth. He knows he's wrong . God help us all.
Use your head Kim not your heart its sad what happend but we are talking about your freedom and safty as well if you were in a situation were stranded somewhere and someone attacked you and was holding a knife to your throat and and you yelled out for help and there was another Female around that heard you and she was a little woman not able to physicaly help you how would you feel, and then you seen her pull a pistol from her bag and you knew then you were going to have a chance to go back home to your family?. Now how do you feel?....uuha thats what i Thought ..
Tony, Liberals are moved by emotions, not facts.
I am absolutely amazed that no one is confronting the media personalities, like David Gregory, about his argument over high capacity magazines. If a criminal, willing to kill school children point blank has one 30 round magazine versus three 10 round magazines, would have have had any impact whatsoever? How long does it take to swap out a clip? Certainly less than one second. So the Democrat party line continues this absolutely baseless argument bordering on insanity and they think that they are actually appealing to the public and their common sense? I am embarrassed for you Mr Gregory and all of your cohorts that actually believe that you are pushing a viable solution to rampage shooters. It is apparent that the liberal left and media will continue to push this absolute propaganda for the foreseeable future. It is baseless, it is nonsensical and you will eventually be called out on this in the public eye. When the next slaughter of innocence uses those 10 round clips, what will be your next heroic call to action? Finally, I have never had an interest in joining the NRA but I do now. I hope my other fellow Americans can see through this utter fraud being pumped in to our ears by the media and think for themselves.
Amen!! Most people that have guns get good enough with them that a 10 round clip won't slow them down very much. I would like to know if David Gregory owns any guns????
I am a wife. I am a mother. I am a gun owner. I am NOT, however, a gun nut, nor am I a member of the NRA because members such as President Wayne LaPierre consistently prove that they are completely out of touch with what America needs.
I sat in my living room just over a week ago with tears streaming down my face and my heart in my throat for the unimaginable losses of such innocent lives. Lives full of hope, dreams, and love. I thought about my own children, one of whom was in school at the time of the tragedy. I thought about how something so horrific could actually happen. I live in a suburban community much like Newtown, and not that far from it either. I see myself in those people, those altered lives, and I can barely wrap my head around HOW, how we as a nation failed yet again.
Everyone knows that the problem is too complex for just one solution to be presented, for just one attempt at resolution. Simply put, everything and anything should be attempted before even one more young life is lost. But to demean the severity of this nation's predicament- its lack of proper mental health initiatives, its lapse in gun control laws, its lack of upholding the laws we do have, and a diminshed economy which has led to many civil service cuts across police and safety units- by outlining what summed up to a one-shot (no pun intended) attempt to hand more weapons to the "good guys" is ludicrous.
Even if someone (one of the good guys) on that school ground had access to a firearm, would it really make me or any of those parents who are standing over fresh gravesites feel any better that their children could have been in the midst of an OK Corral shoot-out rather than a massacre? I think not. The bottom line is no one - NO ONE other than active military personnel - should have access to weapons that can create such destruction in less than a minute. LESS than a minute!
I hunt. I can never EVER imagine a need to purchase a weapon with a high capacity cartridge. Good Lord, but if I can't fell the animal in less than three shots, then it deserves to live rather than become venison swiss cheese. I certainly would not want such a weapon in my home. Unless my home was under SIEGE, again, I would have no need than a few rounds to protect myself and my family while waiting for the real "good guys". Gun safe or no gun safe, there is always the additional possibilty that it could fall into the wrong hands. I would not want it on my conscience if it ever did.
In response to those who argue that three 10 round clips would be the same as a single high capacity 30 round clip, and therefore "left liberal media outlets" are spewing propaganda, maybe, just maybe, slowing down a crazed gunman for even just a few seconds while he/she needs to change a clip would allow for enough time to do something. Anything. Tackle him to the ground? Escape? Call for help? Just...something. A madman intent on harm will most likely do harm, but aren't we all trying to DECREASE such harm? I don't see how even MORE arms is the answer, no matter whose hands they are in.
I do not fear the loss of my second amendment rights. I fear more loss of life. In fact, I believe stricter gun control laws would actually STRENGTHEN my second amendment rights because my legitimate purpose for gun ownership would be protected. Assault weapons and high capacity cartridges have no place in society. Period. Their only place should be in war. It should be illegal to purchase them, re-sell them, and they should be seized or bought back. Background checks should be mandatory. There should be no gun show loop holes.
What ridiculous statements and non-answers such as those of LaPierre today do is make people believe that all gun owners are extremists. I purposely distance myself from such organizations, and yet I am likely to be lumped up into a gun nut category because of them. My husband used to be a long arms safety instructor, but since certification in firearm safety and proficiency is administered by the NRA, he has allowed his license to lapse. He too wants nothing to do with this radical organization. The NRA does not represent all sportsmen.
Bravo Bravo Bravo.. well said. now for you suzanne it takes less than 2 seconds for a magazine to be droped and slam in another theres no way that mags are even a factor in this more people die from drunk drivers every day than guns, use your use your first amendment rights and strengthen the alcohol laws if you want to save more lives.
Well said, Tony. Any gun can be used to kill a LOT of people in a very short time. I'm beginning to think that the only reason some shooters prefer to use a semi-automatic rifle is because of the looks and the appeal. I think it's a purely psychological thing. That young man could have had many clips on him. Popping out a clip and inserting another full one takes only a couple seconds. I don't think people are really thinking deeply about what is going on here. There are too many emotions involved. Regardless of the kind of gun he used, the police are TOO far away to be of much use. Either an armed guard needs to be at each school, or the principals and/or teachers need to be armed. It is sad to have to resort to this, but it is the only way to really ensure a reduction in the number of victims during a mass shooting.
I have said this before, it was when the gunman was changing magazines at the Tucson shooting, that the people were able to overpower him. Had he not had a 30 round magazine, fewer innocent people would have been shot/killed in that incident.
And, if you can do the same with three ten round magazines as you can with one 30 round magazine, why do you need the 30 round magazine?
Suzanne818: I'm with you. Really, the only reason to have high capacity clips is not to hunt, but to have fun with. We do enjoy shooting pumpkins come fall. Will I freak out of they ban high capacity clips? Nope. I don't need more than 10 shots to make swiss cheese out of a pumpkin.
As I believe Meet the Press is filmed in Washington DC, Mr. Gregory seems to be in violation of the DC High Capacity Ammunition Magazine Law (D.C. Official Code 7-2506.01)
(b) No person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm. For the purposes of this subsection, the term large capacity ammunition feeding device means a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition.
I would hope that the DC Metropolitan Police will take appropriate action as they would with anyone else violating their strict gun control laws.
If guns are the problem, how come there are not more mass shootings at gun shops? Isn't that where there is the highest concentration of guns?
Neanderthal Rifle Association
Wayne LaPierre is a douche bag!
your a douche bag, idiot i mean elliot. typo
