David previews this Sunday's exclusive interview with the NRA's Wayne LaPierre. In the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, there have been new calls for tougher restrictions on access to guns in America. Sunday, in his first interview since the shooting, we’ll talk exclusively with the head of the National Rifle Association, Wayne LaPierre, about gun control and what he thinks should be done to curb the threat of violence in America.
PREVIEWING THE PRESS: NRA's Wayne LaPierre Speaks Out Sunday

If this person is Larry Pratt...don't bother...he has already said all teachers should carry guns and feels assault weapons and guns which shoot multi rounds should be available to the general public. If we ask teachers to carry guns and go along with bulletproof backpacks for children...we have lost as a society. We are allowing these gun lovers to win and use the Constitution as their excuse. The Constitution was written in different times and did not apply to these types of guns...if it is to be used to allow this...it needs to be changed as we have done in the past when we have needed to. We do not need to sink to the level where we all will need guns. If we start with the teachers...where does it stop...should every home have a gun? Let's get serious here.
pat if we all had weapons we wouldn't be having this conversation. It is time you liberals get over the fact that the second amendment does matter. It is my right to bear arms which I personally do not but do not make the mistake thinking you will take that right away with out a major fight from us law abiding citizens that own guns. The constitution states we have the right to bear arms so stop twisting the language around to suit your liberal mind. The makers did not have insight to know what kind of weapons we would have today they gave us the right to own them if we choose. If to want to get serious about this have a conversation about violence in video games, television, movies, and mental health. Your knee jerk reaction doesn't fly in the face of my rights
I would assume then, that you are a member of a well regulated militia?
Let, get some common sense, nobody is going to repeal the 2nd amend., we have firearms and a concealed carry permit. What is wrong with folks that feel that if controlling a weapon designed to do one thing, that is kill, kill as many, and as fast as possible, with as many rounds as possible is some sort of infringement on personal rights. We are out of control, you cannot rationalize private ownership of combat weapons as a necessity. Your post is border-line hysterical. There are limits on the 2nd amend. as there is on the 1st.
being trained to use assault rifles and 45 caliber pistols wouldnt take much with either to kill a whole bunch of people. And yes to johndevine we are awell regulated militia called the American citizens.
I think that militia exists only in your mind.
Let, the National Guard is the state's answer to a militia, they have assault weapons as well they should, not private citizens. You contend that the American Citizen is in fact a militia--who calls you up,who directs you to the threat, who organizes and plans against a threat? Your full of beans--this is not like a Volunteer Fire Dept., no state will sanction a community of vigilantes.
So we have armed guards at banks but not schools, therefore we care more for our money than our children’s lives. Are armed guards effective? When was the last mass murder at a bank? Going postal: the term came from an UNARMED group. I noticed that they didn’t call it going bankal!!! And I bet there are plenty of people who would like to go bankal. Therefore being armed is both a deterrent and a safety edge. The term over educated idiots comes to mind when I think of our schools.
NOTE TO POLITICIANS: If you pass a law that makes my new $1500 assault rifle illegal I will make a note of your name and vote for anybody else in November. Also note, there are 300 million guns in the US; that is a lot of votes. The term political suicide comes to mind.
Because our government refuses to protect our children I can’t help but get the feeling that they are using our feelings for our children’s safety to get us to give up our 2nd amendment rights???
Gun laws are effective?? Look at Canada: In America 80% of the prison population is black, and about the rest are Hispanic. I don’t see blacks and Hispanics in Canada, so I expect that they would have a lower crime rate. Apples and oranges comparison. Look at Mexico: Hispanic population, whole towns getting wiped out by illegal gun toting gangs. Their government threw the population to the wolves with gun control.
Why is our government loading up on ammunition while at the same time trying to pass gun laws??
Why Does The U.S. Government Need So Much Ammunition?
In my previous article, I also noted that the U.S. government appears to be very rapidly making preparations for something really big.
This week, it was revealed that the Social Security Administration plans to buy 174,000 hollow point bullets which will be delivered to 41 different locations all over America.
Now why in the world does the Social Security Administration need 174,000 bullets?
And why do they need hollow point bullets? Those bullets are designed to cause as much damage to internal organs as possible.
But of course this is only the latest in a series of very large purchases of ammunition by U.S. government agencies. The following is from a recent article by Paul Joseph Watson....
Back in March, Homeland Security purchased 450 million rounds of .40-caliber hollow point bullets that are designed to expand upon entry and cause maximum organ damage, prompting questions as to why the DHS needed such a large amount of powerful bullets merely for training purposes.
This was followed by another DHS solicitation asking for a further 750 million rounds of assorted bullets, including 357 mag rounds that are able to penetrate walls.
Now why in the world would the government need over a billion rounds of ammunition?
If it was the U.S. military I could understand this. You can burn through a whole lot of ammunition fighting wars.
But this makes no sense - unless they believe that big trouble is coming.
George Soros:
Perhaps even more disturbing is what he believes is coming after the financial collapse....
As anger rises, riots on the streets of American cities are inevitable. “Yes, yes, yes,” he says, almost gleefully. The response to the unrest could be more damaging than the violence itself. “It will be an excuse for cracking down and using strong-arm tactics to maintain law and order, which, carried to an extreme, could bring about a repressive political system, a society where individual liberty is much more constrained, which would be a break with the tradition of the United States.”
The argument that the constitution was written in a different time and does not apply to these types of guns is weak at best. The tactics used in that era made the muzzle loader a fearsome weapon. Throughout the early period of this country advancements in arms technology and use was constantly sought. The Civil War brought the largest advancements in weaponry with the introduction of the metallic cartridge and breach loader. The governments were fairly quick to embrace the advanced technology. We as citizens are not taught our responsibilities any more. What ever happened to Civics classes in school? No one seems to know the individual responsibilities of being a US citizen today.
Maybe if we a pre-crime division or ''minority report'' we could have stopped young adam from comitting that terrible crime. Maybe we could have done a better job of educating him and all kids on the differences of right vs wrong. Lets stop blaming guns for what a criminal does. Do we blame cars for when a drunk gets in his car and drives, and kills someone?
driving is a privilege, drunk driving usually has unintended consequences. I don't believe drunks deliberately drive to kill people, the CT. horror was a deliberate, premeditated mass killing aided by a mother, whom, if not disturbed herself, enabled a very sick young man by giving him access to her arsenal. Meanwhile she paid a price too. This isn't just a someone who is dead, its 20 children shredded along with 6 adults by a weapon designed for one purpose only, dealing death. Your point is moot.
let...if all of us had NO weapons we wouldn't be having this conversation either. It's time you paranoid crazies stop twisting what the founding fathers intended with the Second Amendment. The National Guard now fulfills that intention.
All the other scare tactic bullsh*t you idiots try and sell to the rest of sane-minded is just that...bullsh*t.
And by the way, I own over a dozen firearms for sporting and I'm a former combat veteran. If I can say it's time for a serious discussion about responsible firearm safety then any person of same mind can as well.
I guess we can count you out of that group.
DSP - CAPT/USNR
Wayne LaPierre is why I let my NRA membership expire.
10-4! I tossed my NRA membership in the trash over 20 years ago...about the same time G.H.W. Bush did.

DAVID GREGORY, Ask this clown Sunday why he made the NRA the victim of this tragedy in the first few minutes of his speech.
Before the speech was finished he outlined how the NRA would make a profit off this tragedy.
The NRA is so used to spewing the same lies over and over to brainwash their membership that they believe their own bs.
skyparrot the only hysteria I see here is you liberal progressive's jumping on a tragedy to implement your liberal views on all of us.It is a infringement on personal rights. The Constitution makes it clear that the people have the right tpo bear arms for protection against their freedoms. This evil monster is a product of a political correct society that doesn't make the person responsible for their actions by feeling sorry for the criminals in our society. When you finally get it good honest law abiding won't worry about losing their rights by a knee jerk president and goofy vice president
Let, stop it, for all intents and purposes the Lanza family were law abiding citizens, if you are a God person, how is that you can reasonably rationalize private ownership a device purposely designed for killing other human beings. I do not feel sorry for criminals or their actions deserve punishment. I feel sorry for folks that believe that owning an assault weapon is an infringement of some fantasy right, the 2nd amend. is not limitless, tell the families of the little ones that its a knee jerk reaction in attempting to limit private ownership of combat weapons. I am sure you'll get a sympathetic ear. America will never be the same, and neither will the families of the CT. horror. It is time to step up and stop the madness.
johndevine your comments are a feeble attempt to irritate me (won't work my friend. I have earned the right to bear arms. You probably are just a small minded liberal sissy who still lives at home in your mommy's basement.
Let, you are a knee jerk advocate for killing as many, as quickly as possible. I have worked for my rights too, and one of those rights is to be safe from private ownership of weapons of war.
you are safe until the next nut case comes along probably with a knife and you will want them outlawed too.
Hardly the same analogy, I might survive a knife but certainly won't a Bushmaster with a 30+ clip, just so much shredded meat.
let...that whole knife, rock, scissors analogy is the biggest pile of donkey sh*t and you know it. There is NO WAY that nut would have murdered 26 people with any of those devices.
In China a nut killed 22 students with a knife. Anyway the 2nd amendment is to protect us from our government. So get some armed security in the schools to protect our kids. This is not rocket science. Every mass murder in the last 20 years has been in an area that had baned guns. Oh I know let's put up a sign that says no guns allowed (translated: everyone in here is unarmed and helpless). You guys have been drinking to much of the government's kool aid. When was the last mass murder at a bank: answer: NEVER. The nuts go for the easy targets like schools and no gun signs.
Dav1bg - just a quick correction to your story. He stabbed 22 students. They ALL lived. That's the difference between a knife and an assault weapon that has as a primary purpose to inflict as much damage as possible in as little time as possible. Life vs. certain death.
The slippery slope argument doesn't hold up to real statistics. Nearly 10,000 people are killed yearly in the US by guns. That's WAY higher than every other advanced, industrialized country in the world. The only place you'll find higher gun mortality rates are in South and Central America where the drug cartels kill for sport. Here's a good chart from the Washington Post for comparison -
The Fact that there are already millions of Large Capacity Magazines & so called Assault rifles (semiautomatic gun) is a good reason for a Law abiding Citizen to be able to have one, I have the "right" to defend myself against criminals that have that type of weapon by depriving me of that right you are in effect trying to make me a victim ! If you choose to be a victim that is your right but you don't have the right to make me a victim with you, Yes not all guns are designed to be used for hunting some are designed for Marksmanship competitions, some are designed for self defense etc. the AR-15 is designed for both self defense & Marksmanship competition but it is also legal to hunt with it, that is not a bad thing, an AR-15 (semiautomatic rifle) in the hands of a responsible sane Law abiding citizen is not a bad thing, very few crimes are committed with this type of gun, the bottom line is these guns exist in the MILLIONS & we have a right to protect ourselves from someone carrying one, the police cannot do it for us so focus your efforts on making sure law abiding citizens can only get the guns & make them responsible for keeping them locked up from criminals that way everybody wins gun owners rights are not infringed upon & the bad guys won't have access to a gun. ;-) I for one have NO intention of giving up ANY of my guns to become a victim because some Liberal Whacko thinks I don't have a right to protect myself or enjoy hunting or target shooting etc. with 350+ Million guns in the U.S and growing guns aren't going away anytime soon so better get use to it & come up with some other way to protect yourself & our children. Listen to the NRA they have the right idea & i'm betting they will have a lot more new members now with all this talk of gun bans ..... I know I intend to become a member now. Also thank God for Senators like Senator Graham.
You are correct, this kid planned to kill. He planned to commit a crime. If all the weapons were locked up, and he broke in and stole them, is it still the guns fault? As for this kids mother(RIP) I highly doubt she believed her son capable of such a thing. That being said, what does a mass murderer look like? So what about all the roughly million of abortions that occur in this country yearly? Does that as premeditated?
Colorado, Wisc., Tuscon, Va. Tech, Columbine, Pikeville, Ky, the list is endless and all premeditated. Yes blame the weapon and easy access to them. yup, why lock the doors at home, why bother, a burglar is going to get in anyway, really that's your rationale. So why make it easy to own and buy a weapon of war, because why....? Any hindrance to ownership of these type of weapons is better than nothing.
Parrot: shut down your computer and smoke some more pot.
''count as premeditated?"
So which side of the GOP brain does he get if Grover get's the other side to control and do they work as a team, partners, etc. in running the world?
What would you say to any of the families of tragedies. Even when the ban was active, the crime rate didn't decrease. The massacre at Columbine was with shotguns and pistols the kids practiced with, before committing their terrible crime. We haven't outlawed kool-aid yet, maybe we shoud have. Its a social issue. Kids not knowing right from wrong. Thats saying that anyone who watches a violent war movie, or video game will become a mass murderer. Fortunately my parents, teachers, religous leaders taught me the difference of whats right and wrong.
Columbine and Pikeville were kids, the others considered adults, Sikh Temple shooting by a grown man as was Colorado, as was Tuscon and Gabby Gifford Va. Tech. My home life, my family and yes some "real" religious people taught me morals and ethics, I am also a proud possessor a an empathy gene--sadly lacking in some advocates for the private ownership of Weapons of War. comparison of outlawing kool-ade is silly. Apples and oranges.
skyparrot your just being shrill tazcrush is right your view of utopia is getting in the way of common sense. You liberals always paint the picture to fit your view. how about my rights I fought for my country and have earned the right to bear arms. I will tell you this you progressives give up obama care and abortions etc we will have the rights to bear arms conversation . What do you say to that murder is murder or is it just another way to twist the meaning around to fit your liberal views.
Let, not being shrill, answer me if possible, rationally, how is the 2nd amend. ban an infringement? How is the 2nd amend. infringed upon a ban on over-stuffed magazines? What is the purpose of private ownership of combat weapons? I do not expect Utopia anywhere here on earth, what I do expect is people are not slaughtered with combat weapons in the hands of private citizens.
Thank you for reminding me that weapons can kill, as do a great many other things. They can be used in war, any weapon can. They can also be used in defense of somthing as well.
Taz, defense of what, I am speaking of weapons specifically designed to do one thing and have already addressed that with you. Your 9 mil, 6 shooter, etc., can be used for defense and in war--assault weapons by themselves have only one function.
The second amendment is about citizens having combat weapons. We may need to fight our own government. This just kind over your head didn't it.
I hope in all this gun debate, our legislative officials don't forget that our taxes will be going up very soon, and I think none of us want to pay more taxes to the government! We have alot of issues that need attending to!
Assault weapons shoot bullets like every other gun! Some people use them for targets, others use them to hunt, (with magazine restrictions in some states). However, when pointed at a person and shot, they do they same thing as a pistol or a shotgun.
They can be used in defense of ones home for example...family. Granted the chance of that happening is probably slim, but its still a choice because they are legal! Check and see if the crime rate went down, when the assault weapons ban was active. Remember, guns don't kill people, people kill people.
This is a pointless argument. I don't own a military firearm or care much if they are restricted but a ban on assault weapons would not have prevented the murders. Unless we place armed security in public places, evil or insane people will be able to gain access and slaughter innocent lives. It appears that this very sick young man spent hours desensitizing and training his mind to kill. If it wasn't a black rifle, he could have used a shotgun, knife or bomb. People still would have died. Simply legislating more gun restrictions won't protect our children; and creates a false sense of security. But as a gun owner, I would support closing the used gun sale loop whole so that every owner would be required to have a current background check and registration of firearms.
Read from the local interview below with an NRA board member from Wisconsin, Buster Bachhuber, who is quoted in the interview as saying, the gun control issue is about freedom, and "maybe you just got to take your lumps when you're free" and accept that every now and then large numbers of people will be shot to death.

God, we have developed some really crazies in WI. I don't know what it is.
Reminds me of the story of the camel. He asked if he could just put one foot inside the tent to be warmer. Then the other foot, etc. until he was inside and the master was pushed outside. Where does this registration, background check, smaller clip, non semi automatic, creep stop? When we all have to use flint locks? No: Banks have had armed guards for many years and had no mass murders from disgruntled citizens. It works. This whole gun control thing is bad deal. I fear for my country because of the amount of weak minded people I see posting on the Internet. Making comment as if expert with no clue about what the 2nd amendment was really for. Our public schools are failing us by not teaching the foundations of freedom to our children.
Maybe we should allow private industry manufacturing small nuclear missiles (that anyone can buy without regulation, background checks, etc.)! Otherwise, it is like letting the camel put its first foot into the tent, and then...!
A "well regulated Militia" means a group of armed men who train regularly and have an officer corps. We have that. It's called The National Guard. Guns for private citizens should be banned.
Cowards with guns need them for protection from other cowards with guns. We can't make cowards brave, but we can disarm them.
Let's get something straight right now! If you support the 2nd Amendment, you cannot be in favor of banning certain types of firearms. You have to make a choice one way or the other. To say I support the 2nd Amendment, but I don't see why anyone "needs" high-capacity magazines, or semi-automatic firearms, or this type of rifle or that type of shotgun is a simple contradiction of terms.
Everyone who believes in the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, must realize that the gun grabbers don't want ANYONE -- besides themselves, the police, the military, and their bodyguards or security personnel -- to have ANY firearms. When the gun-control groups go after any type of firearm because of the belief that nobody "needs" such firearms, that is just a foot in the door of total banning of private ownership of firearms.
Look at the logical progression.
This time the anti-firearm forces want to ban high-capacity magazines and modern semi-automatic rifles capable of firing more than ten rounds from a single magazine. We won world War II with the Garand, only capable of firing eight rounds from a single clip. Yet the troops could with practice fire 40 rounds or more per minute with that rifle.
Anyone with practice can fire 50 or more rounds per minute with ten-round magazines from any semi-automatic pistol.
Even with a revolver, using speed loaders, more than 20 rounds per minute are quite possible.
Does anyone believe the gun grabbers are ignorant of these facts? Reloading most firearms with a fresh magazine takes only a few seconds. Many older .22 rifles hold 15 rounds or more. A shooter with two or more weapons can easily fire 20 rounds or more in less than 10 seconds.
The bottom line is that even if all high-cap firearms were confiscated and destroyed -- an absolute impossibility in reality -- madmen and terrorists could still use what is left to inflict horrible casualties.
A shotgun loaded with buckshot can send dozens of pellets into a crowd with a five-round magazine.
So when they come after one type of firearm, it is just a matter of time before they come after YOUR firearm of choice.
Only a total ban of all private held weapons will satisfy them, so stand firm against banning ANY firearms; it is the only way the 2nd Amendment can continue to be our bulwark against tyranny or terror.
You, sir are delusional and the reason why this great country is awash in 300 million guns. By flooding the country with guns you have made it ridiculously easy for a criminal or a mentally ill person to get a gun. You are the root cause of the problem. Where does this end? If this madness continues every man, woman and child will have to carry an assault weapon and dress in battle armor to walk outside. You and your NRA wackos are no heroes. You are beneath contempt.
You are a fool if you think you can protect yourself against a tyrannical government - or do you believe that the 2nd Amendment allows private ownership of nukes, F-22s, and drones?
Let's get something straight right now: you are an idiot,
Exactly the Liberal whackos will never get it but fortunately for us they don't have to get it, there are Millions of guns in the U.S and there not going away in our life time because there are to many Americans who will not allow themselves to become victims, so I say let the Liberal whackos whine about more Gun control because it will do as much good as pissing into the wind, there won't be more Gun control because many Senators also own AR-15s like Senator Graham, I suspect there will be armed guards in more schools so the NRA will get what they suggest & our kids WILL be safer while we continue to be able to own semiautomatic Rifles & Pistols not to be confused with an M-16 Machine gun like the Military uses those are now & will continue to be Illegal. Gun owners have no interest in losing their semiautomatic guns & police have no interest in trying to take them from Millions of Americans so get use to the idea. ;-)
While advocating for his members second amendment rights to bear arms, LaPierre called for an infringement of video game makers first amendment rights of free speech.
There's nothing wrong with helping school districts (who want to) get armed guards and safety plans. The problem is that LaPierre wants to do that INSTEAD OF controlling gun sales and assault weapons. There's absolutely no conflict (except the artificial one the NRA is espousing). I'm all for increasing the availability of armed guards to schools and public meeting places that want them. I'm also all for controlling assault weapons, multi-round magazines and illegal sales of unregistered weapons to those who are unwilling (felons) or unable (psychiatric) to keep them from being used in crimes and mass murders. Where is the conflict?????
Newtown to NRA - We just lost 20 first graders to a guy with an AR-15
NRA to Newtown - Well, that was just 1 bad one, we just sold another 8000 good ones.
There are approximately 98,000 schools in the US. If each school is staffed with 2 ARMED persons, give them a hand gun and a rifle, that means we just added 392,000 more weapons. Bet the gun producer's are drooling over this. Then add a semi automatic feature and suddenly we have 11,000,000 bullets just waiting to hit something. What a grand idea!!! Columbine High School had ARMED protection, is there something I am missing here?
Prof Bill, yes you are. I seem to recall there are other devices of human nature that was banned, and are also illegal. Drugs. Do you see articles in newspapers and TV about drug possession and crimes caused by drugs by the way? Gee, we have a law where possession is illegal but people have easy access to anyway. Banning a gun is not going to stop thugs from getting that gun.
Also another point that EVERYONE misses is.. semi auto is semi auto. No matter what the gun looks like. If I brought a hunting rifle, or a semi auto handgun into a mall and pulled the trigger it would act the same way as a ,look so mean Assault rifle.
So lets ban all rifles and handguns...yeah right that would solve the problem!
DAV1PG, I had to write down all your points. That is great points to bring up to these people with their eyes blindfolded.
How does Mr. LaPierre propose to pay for these armed guards? I live in an the greater Cleveland area and there are many public school systems that can't afford new textbooks, computers and children's parents have to pay for extracurricular activites? School levies to pay for the above are routinely defeated at the polls. I am not against the NRA and the majority of people with guns are people who use them safely and concientiously but the time has come for meaningful dialogue. I am tired of hearing all of the NRA cliches , we all compromise at least once every day of our lives and so must they. Assault rifles must be banned............
Mr. LaPierre,
If your REALLY want to stop a "bad guy with a gun" how about taking the gun away from him instead of selling guns to all the good guys? Try to remind yourself, you represent a GUN lobby, not a PUBLIC SAFETY organization.
