NBC's David Gregory moderates the Massachusetts Senate debate between U.S. Sen. Scott Brown and his Democratic challenger, Elizabeth Warren. Watch the entire debate here.
Brown, Warren face off in Massachusetts Senate debate
Mon Oct 1, 2012 6:53 PM EDT

David, I never seen such an unfair debate. As a moderator you should be unbiased. I see that you gave Ms. Warren more time debating . You over talk Sen. Brown and more. AS of today. I am telling my friends to turn off MSN Meet the Press.
I had heard that Scott Brown was very smart and articulate. Come to find out he isn't at all. Why does he keep questioning her heritage? He comes across as a biggot. He seems very uncomfortable with his stances on everything and doesn't seem like he really wants the voters to know where he stands. I am very disappointed in him.
Scott Brown is not stupid. He is an astute politician. As such he talks a lot , and says very little. He deflects the questions he does not want to address. After the debate was over I could not recall anything of substance he said.
He attacked Elizabeth Warren on her positions often, but defended poorly. Then I realized , he had no positions to attack.
I have to agree with Dan1733303's assessment.
nice job ms warren. senator brown looked like he was holding in a lot of contempt for ms warren. i hope the democrats get senator kennedy's seat back
Amazing. The clips showing now, even on MSNBC, show Warren stumbling on an answer on who she could work with and her response, Sen Lugar, who is leaving. The real SHAME is she went on beautifully to give a number of examples of many Repub. she has worked successfully with on a number of commissions. Unfortunately her initial stumble makes better TV.
The Today Show also just showed the small clip of Warren's first stumble and nothing of her excellent recovery with specifics. What a shame she is losing this point because of editing for better TV just to create something for the networks to show. You will not know this if you didn't watch the original debate. Shame.
David Gregory is as a slanted biased reporter as Chris Matthews.... these morons try to creat the news, rather than report it in an UNBIASED manner. they are losers with large egos and small brains! >>>>>>>> The democrats controled the one seat in Massachusetts, since the 1950's when JFK had the seat before wining the presidentcy, then senator sleaze, ted Kennedy had a lock on that seat...courtesy of STUPID VOTERS, until his death..... and what all did the democrats do for the people of Massachusetts...... NOTHING!!!
Stupid Voters in Massachusetts? Why did they give Scott Brown a chance or elect successive Republican Governors like Weld, Cellucci and.Romney? Warren is smarter than Brown and will work for the common man and not support the failed republican policies that ruined the economy. You are a poorly informed idiot and dumb enough to vote for Romney. The voters of Massachusetts know Romney best and overwelmingly reject him based on his failed leadership in Massachusetts .Stop attacking the media and the polls for your lame candidates and there stupid ass policies. Chris Wallace's interview on Fox and Ryan's failure to know the cost of Romney's tax cuts and have an explanation for them 5wks from the election is pathetic and anyone who votes for them deserves what them will get-- 4more years of Bush!
I am new to this format, but I am shocked at the amount of partisan opinions. Been working for the same company for 28 years and one of our core values is teamwork. Its no wonder Congress has such a low approval rating because its going to take reaching accross the ailse to move Mass and USA ahead. I am afraid this all started when Obama let Reed and Pelosi write the stimulus bill and ignored any GOP input. Haven't checked the records in detail, but it seen like Brown is more likely to compromise with the Dems in the Senate as opposed to Warren who seems prettly left of center. Of course it sure doesn't help when every single MSNBC cable show (Now with Alex Morgan, Ed Shutlz, Rachel Maddow, Hardball, Martin Bashir) is more interested in spinning the news than reporting the facts. No secret to me and others what their political leanings are.
You don't sound at all fair and balanced. Of course MSNBC is left leaning but no more so than Fox is right leaning. Neither are new organization. Both are opinion shows. Isn't that glaringly obvious. As far as the stimulus bill it was mainly written by Pelosi and Reed but they were the leaders of the House and Senate. Who else would write the bill. However the tax break provisions in the bill were written by Collins and Snow, the two republican senators from Maine.
I find it quite ironic that eric refers to david gregory and chris matthews as morons
Can't lay the political divide on democrats. This got it's beginning with Newt and Tom Delay. They made civility a thing of the past. Now both are getting their just deserts. Newt being irrelevant, heading to Mars and Tom will soon be spending his time behind bars.
Hey, PoliticalDoc, wait until you see the cost of Obama's plans. It will be a whole lot more than Romney's. By the way, those Republican policies haven't failed all the way around. There are several states with Republican governors where everything is going better than in some states with Dem governors. And its not like Obama hasn't failed either! His foreign policy is going down the toilet. Guess the talk about failure works on both sides. And the only talk I have heard about 4 more years of Bush is the misleading comments from Obama and Biden. Nothing I have heard from Romney sounds like 4 more years of Bush. We can't afford 4 more years of Obama, he already has us broke!!
You need to do a little research. Check out his foreign policy guys, all NeoCon W retreads. If Romney wins we will be at war with Iran in 6 months.
Look at it this way. regardless of the winner in the election, we will be in a major war in the middle east. Not by design on our part, but because we may have to defend Israel from Iranian aggression or react to a Israel preemptive strike. If Romney wins, Israel might survive. If Obama wins, the slowness of his administration's response to an attack on Israel will likely mean Israel as a nation could be destroyed or at least take devastating losses. A small country like Israel could have devastating losses in just a day. What you won't see is any meaningful backing of Israel by the administration. The amazing thing is that the network news liberal elites will not come in on the side of Israel. It reinforces the anti Jewish sentiments that I sense, have always been just below the surface. I fear that there will be a 2nd holocaust, and the Jews again will lose
Eliz Warren ... "we wrote reports and made recommendations" - that is the problem bureaucratic "reports and recommendations'' do not provide employment. Brown should block the stimulus of b.o. coming from the white house stench. Brown properly keeps warren in her academic box.
Really have to hope Brown loses after that display by his staffers. Thumbs down for Brown.
Doug:
Only a very small minded person would make a statement like you just made. Would you want the president fired because a soldier in Afghanistan did something wrong?
Tiresome... the questions asked should have been to the issues these parties would be required to support in the Senate, NOT the personal... David Gregory continues to disappoint more and more...
As the incumbent I thought Scott Brown would win this election easily. IMO he is in a dog fight because the GOP has let the far right take over and because Brown's campaign has waisted its focus on the native america heritage issue. Frankly, I'm discusted by this personal attack approach. I want the candidates to speak on issue and ideas. This guy lost me.
JimT389:
So what you're saying is that honesty and character don't matter to you?
She's obviously lying and cheated on her applications, but you don't see that because you always vote for the candidate with the "D" next to their name.
A good example of why this country is in such a mess.
talking about your federal politics; i cant believe how everyone just accepts that wall street brought down the house. the democratic notion of everyone including my dead aunt should be allowed to own a house was the show stopper. clinton did this with the help of fannie mae and freddie mac; and of course barney frank et al. also the high tech boom that companies didnt have to account for labour costs; the repeal of glass steagel. you name it bill did it. and yet he is still this larger than life figure. cant believe the republicans havnt jump on previous failed socialist ideas. i wish i had a line to their brain trust; i thuink they would like to hear some ideas of mine
by the way im just a stupid canadian; but believe me our liberals here (were)the slickest politicos in the world. wake up america.
Scott Brown is behind in the latest poll. I live in Massachusetts and watched the debates. Although there was no clear winner, Brown came across as petulant and condescending. Most political observers believe he will lose. He won in a special election in January against a weak Democrat Candidate. The turnout was extremely low. The tea baggers were out in force, the Dems not so much. It'll be different this time. Obama will win big here and Ms. Warren will benefit from the sheer volume of votes cast.
The polls also showed Martha Coakley, who unlike Warren has actually done something in her life without lying about her background leading by a larger margin right before Brown pummeled her. Massachusetts is a liberal, 90% Democrat state so the idea any poll here is ever unbiased is silly. Brown will win and I base that simply on the number of Scott Brown signs I see in such left-leaning, Unamerican communities such as Belmont, Weston, Cambridge and Newton. See ya Elizabeth. Go back to teaching your one class at Harvard for the miserly sum of 300,000 a year ms. middle class native American lying scumbag.
Thankfully senators aren't elected based on road signs.
By the way, please focus on the issues, not the candidates' heritage. You are from the most educated state in the nation - please use yours.
I am focusing on the issues. Elizabeth Warren gamed the system by lying about her heritage. Washington is already filled, with lying partisan hacks. Brown, with whom I don't agree all the time, said he'd vote his conscience and has both supported and opposed Obama. Warren will just march in lockstep with him so she never gets my vote. We all pretend we want bipartisanship, but Massachusetts liberals are lying when they say that. By theway we aren't the most educated state in the nation. Inside 128 we have the single highest concentration of college graduates and the second highest concentration of persons with advanced degrees.
"We all pretend we want bipartisanship, but Massachusetts liberals are lying when they say that."
We don't need bipartisanship per se, we just need sensible solutions and to get things done. Hiring Brown enables the Roadblock Republicans to neither propose sensible solutions (holding the middle class hostage) and get nothing done. Brown was part of the worst congress in decades, and we want him back there again, to help filibuster our way to stalemate?
David Gregory as moderator for the debate? Couldn't have been a fair one. Gegory is a surrogate from the MSNBC crowd who works for Media Matters funded by the Nazi war criminal George Soros.
Uusing the Nazi card. What an ignoramus.
Did you watch the debate? I did and Gregory was very fair to both candidates. Why do you right-wing nuts always whine about the media? Did you ever read material from Media matters? Basically, they just point out inaccuracies in statements from the right. I read political opinions from all sides, right and left, to better understand different points of view. You should try to do the same. We have way to many low-information, single issue voters in this country.
Those are the facts, Not my own facts like you guys create or spin.
Again, I ask if you watched the debate? Gregory did not show any bias. What facts are you referring to? Who do you think should have moderated the debate, Rush Limbaugh?
Oh and no I have not seen the entire debate yet. I started to watch it and was not surprised when Gregory's first comment was directed at Brown. He dressed him down over his comments on Warrens claims on minority status, which has been an evolving lie from the beginning. I plan on watching the rest, but based on the beginning of the debate it appeared the debate would not be a fair one.
As for media matters? they violate thier not for profit status every singe day with every article they spin. Another fact.
Anyone who does not embrace ideology from the extremist left where you reside or the extremist right where Rush wallows in the muck. How's that sir libitard.
This non-issue regarding Warren's minority status is irrelevant to most Massachusetts voters. Nobody cares and most consider it a distraction from the important issues. Brown will lose, not because he's a bad guy, but because voters want the Democrats to retain the majority in the Senate.
I'd suggest you sign up for the Media Matters newsletter. Then get back to me and show me where they're wrong. Fair Enough?
Also a moderators job is to engage the candidates not challenge them. Let them challenge each other. Thats what the debates are about. The moderator is supposed to be neutral and act as a "referee". There is no one from NBC or Fox news who can do that. Fairly anyway.
Gregory asked the question, he made it the first issue of the debate. I agree, it's not the most important issue. Character does come into play though, and both candidates have serious issues there. I feel for the state that this was the best they could do.
Do you people REALLY think honesty is not important?
It's plain as the nose on your face she gamed the system.
If a republican did this, liberals would have him on death row.
Didn't see the debate, but half the people seem to think Gregory loves the conservatives and the other half are positive he's a flaming liberal at heart. So it sounds like he did a great job!
How about Jim Lehrer? And you would pick who, Rachel Maddow? Ed Schultz?
Seriously? No I wouldn't pick Rachel or Ed to be moderator. The moderators for the three presidential debates are: Jim Leher, Candy Crawley, and Bob Schieffer, all good choices.
Didn't Brown want to run against R. Maddow the first time around? She would have eaten his lunch.
Uh folks, David Gregory is a Republican, as was his theatre producer father. He has far more Republicans on Meet the Press than any other moderator of that program. I though he was dismissive of Mrs. Warren far too often and allowed Senator Brown to continually go on.
He's about as conservative as Matt Lauer. Guess you dont remember what he was like during the GW Bush years.
Yeah Warren always appears to be kind of lie a deer in the headlights whenever anyone not a Progressive asks her anything.
David Gregory is the most overrated MTP host ever. I am disgusted that he wanted to speak about Afhanistan at the closing minutes of the debate, while spending so much time with Ms. Warren's background and ethnicity. Also, the untruth about the President saying that Al Qaeda was on the run and surmising he was naiive about this latest incident at Bengazi. Hogwash!
The truth hurts sometimes but it will set you free from idiots like Warren who have no business representing constituents with her selfish views that 3% of the electorate in MA agree with.
3% of the electorate agree with Warren's views? Where did you get that from. I live here and can assure you the majority of voters agree with her and she will win. It's pretty presumptuous of you, who are probably a Red Stater, to call our election.
Her radical socialist views are unknown to the masses because voters are uninformed in your state as they are in many other states. Most importantly, she is a liar. Native American? Give me a break! Even said so on her app(s) to Harvard as a student and/or faculty member don't recall which.
But Brown is fixing that.
rebel, most voters here are informed and follow politics. Ms. Warren will benefit from the large voter turnout for the presidential election. Obama is poised to win Mass by 25-30%. Brown was elected in a special election held in January. Most democrats and independents didn't turn out. We won't make that mistake this time. We don't care about this phony issue of her ethnicity. It's a non-issue.
The enthusiasm factor for Obama is nowhere near what it was in 2008. Can you blame the people? 17M more in the poor category, 24M unemployed or given up looking for work, record number of people receiving food stamps, black unemployment at record levels.People do not want more of that.
Unless they are uninformed.
The latest incident in Banghazi? You mean Obama's failure to have marines at the embassy? His one week of lying about it being related to the movie? His complicity in the deaths of Americans? BURN - Obama won't even win by double digits in Massachusetts. He is still running ads here because he's such a nimrod.
Burn I do not find it surprising you would support a liar since elitist liberals have no problem with it so long as it is, as they presumptuously believe, in the best interest of the "little guy'. What an insult in and of itself.
Not to mention we have the biggest liar in the Oval Office right now since Nixon.
Not for long though.
Saw the debate. Your right, he did a great job. As for the candidates I see that Brown is more likely to vote center right, Warren will vote lock step with the Pelosi, Reid agenda that continues the path of destruction this country is on along with the help of the tea party. If we can't get to a more centered style of government we'll be all but toast, and soon.
Burn:
You say that this ethnicity thing is a non issue?
So you're saying that HONESTY is a non issue?
Is that where the Democrat party stands now?
Why don't you make that your slogan?
Warren is a flake. Woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo Chief Awannabe is calling you Ms. Warren. He wants you back in class where you belong. Check that - you don't even belong there with your moronic views on capitalism.
The purpose of politicians is to represent their constituents in a manner that is in the best interest of the country. Because there have been, and will be differences of opinion; there must be compromise which means to “settle differences by mutual concessions”. The theory is that we all have a right to be heard and that the best plan for all will be developed by good faith discourse and compromise. On the other hand, when a politician puts politics ahead of his/her purpose and is not willing to compromise with the opposing party in good faith nothing gets done for their constituents or the country unless one party has a “super majority”. The past 3 years corroborates this point because there has been no compromise and nothing has gotten done for the constituents or the country. Scott Brown’s rare breaks with his party cannot be construed as good faith compromise by any stretch of the imagination and there is no reason to believe that he will put forth a material and substantial change in his behavior if he wins another term.
Quedog:
So you think we should vote for a candidate who will be 100 percent in lockstep with their party?
Instead of a candidate who will vote 75% of the time with his party and 25% with the other?
Did you go to school?
Ted Kennedy was a solid liberal but he was willing to co-sponsor some bi-partisan legislation and Scott Brown has crossed the aisle from time to time. Now take Harry Reid; he is a strident liberal with no intentions of any compromise. Will Elisabeth Warren be a Ted Kennedy or a Harry Reid?
I just don't trust Warren. Brown has been bi-partisan and I hope he will continue to do so. I do not believe that Warren will work accross the isle as Brown does.
Brown is only as bipartisan as it takes to get elected. On every substantial issue, he has voted against Obama. Want more gridlock in Washington? Elect "taking the middle class hostage" Brown.
Scott Brown is a wolf in sheep's clothing. He's trying to trick you into a Republican vote.
You mean his voting for Obama's bailout and the eradication of Don't ask don't tell? Do you thiunk everyone posted here is as stupid as Massachusetts Democrats?
I watched this nasty debate last night on C-Span and Professor Warren is too far left or extreme even for my home state Massachusetts. All my Irish buds in Southie, Dorchester and Roxbury will never buy into Professor Warren's socialistic agenda. Remember Professor Warren was passed over for a Obama Adminstration position because she could not work with either Dems or Repubs and her ideas to break up the Wall Street banks and impose more regualtions was unacceptable to both parties
She was passed over because the Republicans would never confirm her appointment. The same Republicans that wouldn't confirm the Republican Attorney General of Ohio.
"Harvard Law School professor and bankruptcy expert Elizabeth Warren, who was special consultant in charge of implementing it, was removed from the running for director after Obama administration officials became convinced she "could not overcome strong Republican opposition."[7] On July 17, Cordray was selected over Warren as the head of the entire CFPB.[8] However, his nomination was immediately in jeopardy due to 44 Senate Republicans vowing to derail any nominee in order to encourage a decentralized structure to the organization. Senate Republicans had also shown a pattern of refusing to consider regulatory agency nominees, purportedly as a method of budget cutting."
Brown is a Republican funded by Republicans. When push comes to shove on the important issues affecting minorities, middle class, poor and elderly, Brown will, as he has done in the past, cave to support the radical Republican platform. Vote the Republican ticket and be ready for another 4 years of Bushism economic and domestic politics and policies. There is no question in my mind that if Republicans prevail in this election, all of us, except for the wealthy 1%, are in for some hard times.
Another liar. Brown isn't funded by the RNC.
Looks like you can't read or comprehend the points I made about Republicans funding Brown. I did not even mention or hint a reference to the RNC. The Brown campaign is funded by wealthy Republicans for Republicans knowing that for the really crucial votes regarding taxing the rich , Brown will cave to the Republican pressure machine.!
Why don't you just confiscate all the wealth of the 1%? You know, just take all their wealth? Why not? If you dispise these people, pass legislation to confiscate it all. If I were the 1% and my wealth was confiscated , I would just leave the country, take my knowledge and abilities, and start again in another country. You can take my money, but not my mind.
But that's the rub, you need these people, right? Did you know that there is a mass exodus of the wealthy out of this country. Congress has passed laws in the last decade to impose exit taxes on these people. These people are establishing citizenship in other countries and renouncing US citizenship. ?Nearly 750,000 have left in the last 10 years But we don't need those people, do we?
You've read about the goose that laid the golden egg. Just keep punishing the innovators, the creators of wealth, the dirty, filthy rich. They will disappear, and you will be stuck with what's left.
Who will be your next target?????
Do you honestly think Professor Warren could work with Repubs or Dems??? She has been unable to in her past government jobs so why now??
Tom, name me one Republican who has worked with Obama and the Democrats. Ms.Warren is no more partisan than brown and less so than the majority of GOP legislators.
Scott Brown has worked with both Dems and Repubs. Professor Warren cannot work with anyone who doesn't agree with her socialistic agenda. She needs to stick to her day job teaching at Harvard where she cannot do any damage to the great state of Massachusetts. I just don't like her or her polticis but I may be biased as most of us Bostonian Irishmen are..
Brown thinks he is so hot (NOT). He acts like a snot nosed little brat with his attitude. All he can come up with is that she claims to be part Indian....who cares!
He is a useless pile of flesh working to enrich himself and the 1%
...AND he took money from the evil empire "Skankees"! That is just too much for a Red Sox fan to bare.
She and Harvard benefited financially from taxpayer money due to her lie. I care, as a taxpayer. One day when America is bankrupt and welfare ends maybe you will work, pay taxes and then be pissed off that a liar like Pocahontas stole your money. Idiot Red Sox fan must have missed Warren saying Bobby Valentine deserves another chance next year. Some fan. Go away.
Hey, Jeff, have some faith in your country. America will never be bankrupt. Eventually, congress will raise the revenue and cut the spending we need to be solvent. We just have to rid ourselves of the anti-American tea bagger obstructionists in congress.
Hey burn12, We are bankrupt NOW. Your cavalier attitude toward the national debt is the exact attitude that got us all into this problem in the first place.
"Idiot Red Sox fan must have missed Warren saying Bobby Valentine deserves another chance next year. Some fan. Go away"
Yea but she made Bobby Valentine's day with that comment but doubt she won over anyone in the Red Sox Nation...but what do you expect from an elite Harvard Professor???
BC's David Gregory moderates the Massachusetts Senate debate between U.S. Sen. Scott Brown and his Democratic challenger, Elizabeth Warren. And will be remembered as a complete farce because Gregory did such a poor imitation of his mentor Chris Matthews ie talking over the participants and being a complete idiot
