Former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich re-affirmed his support for Mitt Romney this morning saying he is "totally committed" to helping Romney win the White House.
Gingrich also critiqued President Obama's recent campaign strategy of attacking Romney's economic record as well as his time at Bain Capital.
"This is a little bit like the reverse of James Carville in '92," the former House Speaker said. "Obama picking a fight on the economy is probably the worst possible strategy for his campaign."
Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, a supporter of President Obama, attempted to contrast the President's record with Mitt Romney's.
"What the leader of the whole economy must be concerned about is not the short-term return of profits to a few, but a long-term economy that creates jobs for the many."
O'Malley, a man often mentioned as a possible 2016 presidential candidate received advice this morning from Newt Gingrich about how to prepare for a run for the nation's highest office.
"Raise a lot of money," Gingrich advised.
Our roundtable broke down the ground rules for the campaign and tried to answer the question: What is fair game in this election.
With personal attacks coming from both campaigns, David Brooks contended that it's likely to get worse, "Both people in both campaigns are going to get their juices flowing, and they're going to take meaner and meaner shots."
You can watch our entire program on our website including a special discussion with two sought-after commencement speakers and their advice for the class of 2012: Maria Shriver, and best-selling author Michael Lewis.
We'll be back next week. If it's Sunday, it's Meet the Press.

Reducing voter turnout has been accepted as a Republican strategy, can we agree that mean and nasty might be a tactic of the PAC money supporting the defeat of the Democratic President?
YES !!!!!!
Speaker Gingrich's comment about 'raising a lot of money' highlights why Romney seems to be the nominee - he isn't - he doesn't have enough delegates and won't before the convention. The nominee will be determined at the RNC convention in Tampa at the end of August as it should be. For the GOP to run Romney is ridiculous - his policies are nearly identical to Obama's - which are an absolute failure. The negative campaigning will get worse as the NYC media unleashes on Mitt's corporatist record at Bain, his terrible record as governor and his Mormonism. After two months of that kind of assault Mitt will lose to Obama in an election that will likely have the lowest turnout in our lifetimes.
Speaker Gingrich is still in the race, as is Dr. Paul - both of them will go to the convention with delegates and one of them will take the nomination and defeat Obama. When Newt was Speaker and Clinton was president we had balanced budgets (according to DC standards, not real economics), the largest capital gains tax cut in history and reformed a major entitlement program to cost less and help people more. That is the kind of change that brings real hope. The private economy created 11 million jobs as a response. Texas votes on May 29 - this Tuesday and Newt is on the ballots. We need a POTUS who can get things done in DC - We need Newt!
Not one single republican voted for Bill Clintons budget that balanced the budget!!!!!!! The Republicans do what they always do....Take credit for things they had nothing to do with and blame someone else for their failed policies. ie...they claimed Bin Ladin .....Bill Clintons budget, who did they blame for 911? (hint...Clinton). What have the Republicans done that's ever worked? George Bush? Regan? Regan cut taxes and then raised taxes on all of us! remember? gas tax, taxed unemployment checks, doubled ssi deductions, and many more! and left office as the first Pres. to triple the national debt to a Trillion! But they claim last time they lost their way...I say "no the did what they've always done" get us in trouble and blame someone else.
Reagan and Bush 43 were the biggest spenders and the biggest debt raisers in most people's lifetimes.
Yes because Bush 43 called Reagonomics voodoo economics because he agreed with him, right? Obama has shown such fiscal restraint, huh? I mean what's the problem with trillion dollar deficits, right?
According to right-wing hero Dick Cheney, "Reagan taught us that deficits don't matter."
When are you going to have REAL people on the show!! These guys never tell the truth or deal with what REAL people are thinking, and see about this race in what's happened the last 12 yrs.... No one tells the real story !!! The real story about how people feel and why they vote the way they do!!
Why does David Gregory invite Newt to speak about the election and not ask him about Robert Draper's book where he stated that he and the Republican leadership planned on day one of the new administration to stop Obama dead in his tracks even if it cost the country's economic revival? Does Gregory not do his homework? Was he not prepared to challenge Newt's quote about "laying the seeds of 2012?" This is almost malpractice. Really disappointed in David Gregory.
AMEN
Why didn't he ask O'Malley about calling back the state assembly to raise taxes (again) as he constantly over-spends and raids the budget?
Totally agree. I'm so disappointed in David Gregory. He doesn't bother to ask the right questions or correct false statements. I'm sick of the republicans and Newt talking about gas prices. The president has nothing to do with it. If he did I'm pretty sure he would bring them down and have this election in the bag.
The media was tagged in 2008 for protecting Obama, will they now try to avoid that criticism by accepting the millions in advertising dollars to permit attacking him?
During Obama's first two years as POTUS he had a Democrat-controlled House and Senate and all he managed to do was take what Bush did and make it far, far worse. Then he decided to pick a fight with the Catholic Church and all Christians and people of good will. He is the easiest incumbent to defeat, so how does the GOP respond? They try to force the most liberal, weak and corporatist nominee ever - Romney. The good news is Mitt does not have the requisite delegates and the real GOP nominee will be determined at the convention in August.
Obama is horrible by any stretch - the results of his policies are disastrous and outside of abortion and 'gay' marriage, he hasn't delivered anything to his liberal base - 10 more years of war, Gitmo still open, NDAA, etc. he is so easy to beat EXCEPT by a GOP candidate who is his mirror on policies and less interesting. Mitt is done and with Newt as GOP candidate so is Obama. American can recover just like we did int he 90s when Newt was Speaker.
Try some Pepto-Bismol. Your belly aching demonstrates why negative campaigning will never change anyone's MIND. BTW many people disagree with most of what you claim and it serves to demonstrate why mixing politics and religion is toxic. Jesus Christ did not live long enough to correct the ills of society. Inspiring others is the antithesis of your style of criticism.
Robert, Jesus Christ still LIVES and always will!
People may disagree with what I posted, but please tell me where the facts are wrong.
Too bad you cannot back up your claims with actual facts. Perhaps you should pay closer attention to what is actually happening at the federal level.
The only facts I see above are those I posted. Speaker Newt told us what he was going to do in 1994 with the Contract with America and then in 1995 delivered on that with a hostile GOP and a Democrat in the WH. That is the kind of leadership we need to get us out of the mess we are in now. Mitt doesn't have the nomination, Mitt cannot beat Obama, Obama is terrible; therefore, we need to vote for Newt so he can take the nomination in August and then defeat Obama in November. Recovery begins January 2013!
Robert, since the GOP does not have a nominee, the corporatist media is seeming to attack Obama. They are waiting for Republicans to be stupid enough to commit to Mitt, which can't happen until the convention and hopefully won't happen. If, BIG IF, it does happen, the MSM will unleash on Romney like you have never seen them do before from Sep all though the election. Obama is so flawed and weak that only a weaker candidate can lose to him and the media will make Romney look horrible. He will be attacked for his record at Bain as a job killer and 1% tycoon, he will be attacked as governor for having the lowest economic record saved for the states ravaged by Katrina and his weird Temple Mormon beliefs will be plastered everywhere causing Christians and most Americans to flee from him. He is the worst candidate ever - the media will shift gears and target him instead of Obama unless the GOP gets a better candidate like Paul or even better Newt.
At least we agree that Romney is not the solution. Too bad he was such a Bully to succeed at being the GOP nominee.
Robert - he has not succeeded. The corporatist media is lying to us. Mitt has less than 550 delegates, he needs 1,144. The real nominee will be decided at the convention in August. Mitt is terrible and almost exactly like Obama, who is terrible, even by Democrat standards. We need someone who sticks to American principles and gets things done despite the insiders game in DC. Newt has done it and will do it again. It will be good for him to be President for conservatives and honest liberals alike. We are too close to falling off the cliff to play around with this election. Vote Newt for POTUS and then 2016 can be an opportunity for Democrats to run a better candidate than Obama. I suspect that no one can beat an incumbent President Gingrich, well except the insiders in his own party. Yuck!
David...I watched your show and wish you would try to hide which side you are on a little better. One thing I felt about Newt was how did Romney get so much better in the few short weeks that Newt was bashing him. Newt is now saying how qualified he is but a few weeks ago was saying the opposite. When was he lying...before or now? I would also like to ask you about the notifications which are being sent out to voters in many states like Ohio, Florida and Michigan to mostly spanish, blacks, older people and younger people telling them they must verify who they are and that they are citizens and if they do not respond their names will be taken off the rolls....what the heck is that about? Seems these groups are those which would likely vote for Obama or at least democratic. Is this legal and it would make an interesting show if you would choose to highlight it. We shall see?
Mitt Romney asserts that his experience in private industry gives him especially strong qualifications to be president. However, I observe that the none of the Mt Rushmore presidents or the past "near great" presidents ( FDR, Truman, Kennedy, or Eisenhower (my favorite)) had any industrial experience and all were fine presidents. Perhaps a career in the public sector is the right background to be president.
I am tired of elections being all about money and who can buy the most votes. The voters are not stuck with the establishments choice of Romney, they can vote for anyone else on the ballots or write in a name. Romney can not defeat Obama anyway, Obama will clobber him with the his Mormonism faith, Bain, his far left economic record and so much more. The funny thing is, even with all of Romneys money, he is not energizing the voters and has had very low voter turn-out thus far, Romney can not defeat Obama.
Newt Gingrich is the true conservative and has only suspended his campaign and is still on all the upcoming ballots. Newt could win at a brokered convention and Newt 'can' defeat Obama and he will not even need a teleprompter to do it.
Newt Gingrich has real solutions and can fix the mess this Country is in and we do NEED Newt now. Newt has real plans and real solutions at :
I hope everyone is really informed about their candidates this time and does their own research, the media isn't going to tell them the truth about Romney's bad record nor Newts good record. This is too serious a time for us to get this one wrong, we can not stand four more years of Obama.
I support the real Christian conservative, I support Newt Gingrich!
Be informed and check out Newts solutions and plans:

Rex Christi - maybe speaking in an epistemology would have more credibility.
Easkey, authentic conservatism is based on a very sound epistemology, one that is best articulated by Speaker Gingrich. The GOP hounded him out as Speaker because so many of them are just like most Democrats - opportunists with no principles. Newt and Clinton worked together because they are both smart and despite the fact that I dislike Clinton, they did some very good things for the country. Clinton was a far better POTUS than Obama can dream of being. POTUS Newt can restore sanity to DC despite Republicans and Democrats. Thank God Mitt doesn't have the delegates he needs and that Newt can still be the nominee and defeat Obama.
Newt and Clinton worked together to continue the America-destroying policies begun under Reagan. We've tried conservative economic policies for the last 30 years and the proof is in - they don't work for all Americans. Look at the data.
Obama is making America better in many ways; perhaps most importantly in standing up to my church, the Roman Catholic Church, in its effort to force its will on the government.
Bob, Would that we were employing conservative principles for the last 30 years, but we haven't. We have been alternating between two wings of the same party and Obama is as much of a Statist as any of them. Patriot Act, NDAA, TARP, bailouts, prolonging wars, increasing the police state, burdensome regulation and taxes on American businesses to the detriment of the people and the benefit of a very few well-connected corporations and banks - Obama is just like the rest of the Demopublicans or Republicrats. So is Mitt Romney.
Reagan brought in true conservatism and his own administration and Tip's Congress fought him hard and curtailed much of it, yet we still reversed the disaster of the Nixon/Carter 70s. Newt delivered on the conservatism he promised in the Contract (94/95) and had the GOP not committed mutiny (99), we would probably be in a much better position now, but they ditched Newt and went on a 'compassionate' conservative spending binge, which has only been increased by Obama.
We need to elect Newt to fix it, Mitt won't fix it and he can't beat Obama anyway.
As for your last comment about the Church, I am not so sure she's your Church. Holy Mother Church belongs to Christ and you've got the battle backwards. I suggest you read up on your Bible, Catechism and some encyclicals like Rerum Novarum, Centesimus Annus & Humanae Vitae. You may also want to check out the First Amendment that forbids the federal government from establishing a religion and interfering with the free exercise thereof. Additionally, dissent on matters of faith and morals violates your freely given assent of faith and may place your standing in the Church in jeopardy. I'd think hard about this if I were you - I am not attacking, I am merely concerned about your state, not as a matter of politics about which people of good will can have difference, but rather, about your status vis.a vis. infallible Church teaching.
Happy Pentecost, Happy Easter (one last time for 2012) and a blessed Memorial Day to you and all of our buried heroes. God bless.
Newt (In January):
"The Bain model is to go in at a very low price, borrow an immense amount of money, pay Bain an immense amount of money, and leave. I think that's exploitation."
Perry (That same month):
"There is something inherently wrong when getting rich off failure and sticking it to someone else is how you do your business. I happen to think tht is indefensible."
Robinson:
When Democrats say things like that they are accused of being Bolcheviks who want to destroy capitalism.
Gov. O’Malley cited the fact of O’bama starting with a bad economy inherited by the previous eight years of Bush2, which we would return to under Romney. There is fact and truth in that paraphrased statement. To me, further fact and truth is the 1999 Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act or Citicorp Relief Act that got rid of any substance in Glass-Steagall and included numerous other liberalization of regulation that Clinton accepted up to the last minute of writing the bill from Sen. Phill Gramm. Add to that the Welfare Reform Act of Clinton’s that took away social services to the most needy. Bush2 policies and the corporates merely ran with what Clinton gave them and so continue under O’bama. That is what got us to where we are today. As for private equity, please broaden that to all that is capitalism in corporate form and know that any CEO that considers employment above shareholder interest would be derelict in duty to their shareholders and failed in fiduciary responsibility to the board and corporation itself. Such a responsibility is not limited to only private equity CEO’s, but to any business, including non-profits by substituting “members” or “customers” in place of “shareholders”. Then please move-on and not waste anymore time AND have something more factual and contextual for future discussion rather than picking up with the same inept statements that go no where. Anybody?
Newt "the real Christian conservative" what a joke!
This is a social media era all politics are done instantly and continuously. The President is smart defines the vision for the country (100% FOR ALL AMERICAN; NOT THE 1% ONLY); QUALIFICATION AS PRESIDENT - his achievements speak for itself: rescue the country from financial collapse (DID YOU REMEMBER MCCAIN SAID the fundamental economics of America is good when the roof nearly collapse?!); wind down two longest wars; Bin laden is DEAD, and GM is ALIVE. CBO projects unemployement will bounce back based on Obama's policies to 6% during his 2nd term. Compared to Romney's Govenor record which is shameful and his CEO at Bain is a pain. Why would I leave the horse to ride a raft
there is no justifiable reason to change course. romney will take us to the cleaner and we will end up naked. he has no qualification to take care the country, we don't own bank account in swiss or virgin island.
Rex C. Get a life! You ask where you are wrong on the facts! Where should I start? Have you ever heard of the "Filibuster"? Have you ever heard of "Cloture"? Have you ever heard of "Bluedogs"? This country is not ruled by the democratic process when a simple majority should be the benefit of the party that has the majority! Yes, the democratic party had 60 votes in the senate including two independents, but included in these where the famous insurance controlled Bennie Nelson from Nebraska, Joe war monger Liebermann and even if the democrats could muster up 58 votes, they were filibustered a record number of times by the minority party, so if you want to say that Pres. Obama did not get anything done, please list the facts as to why he did not do so! To say that his policies were the same as Bushes is just a plain lie! I'm sure that you would not agree that America was on the brink of another greatr depression, because your party does not understand what causes these and debt does not matter unless the democrats are in control! GW Bush more than doubled America's debt from $5.7 Trillion to over $11 trillion not even adding in the Iraq and Afganistan war costs! Where were you during those 8 miserable years? Where you out there yelling about all of the debt that Bush amassed upon us?
MD is the most democratic state in the U.S. and O'Malley is despised in here now. He is a true phoney, which makes him a viable candidate.
MD is the most democratic sided state in the U.S. and O'Malley is despised here. He is a phoney which makes him a viable candidate.
Even Occupy Wall Street called for re instatement of Glas Steagal ! Bubba Clinton signed repeal of Glas Steagal AND total deregulation of Credit Default Swaps and derivatives ! Jon Stewart knows what blew up the economy and it wasn't George Bush ! That great liberal LBJ gave us Vietnam, deficit spending, etc. The most anti civil rights party was ALWAYS the cracker Southern Democrats ! Now they are the party of the nanny state ! They do want people to be economically free, they need dependents!
I hate him, but he did a good job here. He clearly outsparred O'Malley. He's a sneaky veteran.
the Republicans are doing a disservice to the nation. to plan to oppose anything the president does during his first days in office, is offensive. that trend has continued with the repub. led house of rep. not even passing highway bills. we are in a new age where some will have us go back to feudalism where we beg rich people for money, not what our founding fathers had in mind for, life, liberty and the pursuit of property. the media being owed by so few has led to very simple and incomplete views in which people who are rich are called job creators., (foolishness). business people start companies but customers create jobs. second all governments came first then business. so customers and government create jobs, whether it's the knights guarding the road or the post office. all jobs create wealth which create customers, which creates a strong tax base for government to fulfill the nation's needs. those who hate government are the ones who benefit most from the protections of a nation but, once they become rich cancel their citizenship or stop admitting that they benefited from a collective tax base. as proof false theories like it's cheaper to pay employees oversea arise. it's more expensive in china for companies due to the fact that all items from sewage, power, housing road repairs, garbage collection, etc., are paid by companies. which is why several companies coop in one massive building to build their products. elitism, racism, sexism, etc. are clouding masses of minds in this nation and some what to sacrifice this nation health to chase a fantasy of some being better then others.
