This Sunday’s Meet the Press featured a conversation between David Gregory and U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner about the state of the economy, the Buffett rule, and the 2012 presidential race. Bloomberg BusinessWeek wrote about Geithner’s comments on the economy: “’Americans generally should feel much more confident about the basic strength of the economy than they would have felt any time in the last four or five, six years,’ Geithner said. Still, ‘it’s a very touch economy.’” On the Buffett rule and its upcoming Senate vote, the Washington Times noted, “’Just because Republicans oppose this does not mean it’s not the right thing to do and not the right thing to push for,’ Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner said on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ program Sunday.” CNN and Politico also covered Geithner’s response to Mitt Romney’s claim that women account for 92% of the job losses during President Obama’s administration. Geithner stated on MTP that this is, “a ridiculous and deeply misleading look at the economy.” You can watch Geithner’s full interview below.
Former Republican presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) squared off in a joint interview on the 2012 election, the gender gap and the economy during this Sunday's Meet the Press. The Hill covered Gillibrand's remarks on working women and recent comments from Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen. “'This election is not going to be about Ann Romney or Hilary’s remarks,' Gillibrand said. 'What this election is going to be about is what candidate fights for American, America’s women, which candidate actually cares about women’s economic opportunity.'" Politico also covered Bachmann’s response to Hilary Rosen’s comments noting: “’I thought it was shocking and insulting,’ Bachmann said on NBC's ‘Meet the Press.’ ‘I think women are going to be very upset.’” Other articles discussed Bachmann's support of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The Wall Street Journal reported that, "Mrs. Bachmann waded into the gender wars Sunday to defend her former sparring partner, Mr. Romney, on NBC’s 'Meet the Press.' She said that President Barack Obama’s economic policies have had a 'disproportionate negative impact on women'” The National Journal covered Bachmann's possible backing of Romney, "Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann stopped just short of endorsing Mitt Romney on Sunday, saying she was 'very seriously looking into an endorsement. I think we're seeing a uniting and a pulling together around our eventual nominee,' she said on NBC’s Meet the Press." You can watch the entire interview below.

How is it that Michelle Bachmann can spend about 10 minutes lying about and disrespecting President Obama with total disregard about any kind of civil conversation while David Gregory sits there with his head up his you know what and allow this type of degradation and moral character assination of the President of the US. This is your President to Gregory and if you had any moral compass or smarts, you would figure this out, but considering the source, that would be expecting way too much from the worst TV host in America! This total lack of controlling an out of control Michelle Bachman and other republicaans on your program is just helping and contributing to the lack of intelligent and civil discourse in America! This is way above you IQ though David, so I will not watch a republican circus and clown show anymore. I hope you get fired and have to go look for a real job one of these days!
right on
It was totally disheartening to watch David Gregory moderate the Bachmann/Gillibrand interview. Did I say moderate? He let Michelle Bachmann prattle on and on and hardly allowed any time at all to Sen Gillibrand's views on the topic. This is the last straw for me. Meet the Press has been a Sunday morning staple at our home for years. No longer. Face the Nation - here I come!
So how come Bachmann gets a free pass on completely contradictory statements about women's health care future under Obama vs Romney AND be allowed to basically run this segment? David Gregory, you are a completely partisan and incompetent "moderator".
I totally agree with the other commenters. I was really disgusted at the way David Gregory let Michelle Bachmann completely take over the conversation. Numerous times she interupted Sen. Kristen Gillibrand while she was trying to make her point. David Gregory made no attempt to stop Bachmann in any way. I commend the Senator for maintaining her cool, because somebody should have told Bachmann to shut up. The woman just rattles on repeating the same nonsense over and over. If I didn't know better, I thought I was watching FOX News Channel.
Don't let David G. interview women ever again. He was totally intimidated by Bachmann.
David how could let the biggest BIMBO in the GOP ramble on for so long.I thought i was watching FOX. You could have busted her on so many things. You never mentioned the latest poll about Obama killing Romney with women. We're you sleeping?? Very disapointing.
It was understandable to have to sit and listen to Bachmann sprout lies and half truths ($2000 increased gas bills because of BO policies!!!) while she was a republican candidate but I did not expect to have to listen to it on MTP. I enjoy listening to both sides discuss policy but I like to see it balanced. Bachmann's performance was more like an ad for the RNC that I would expect to find on Fox News. I can't believe, 1) your booked her in the first place and 2) you let sit and spout off.
I don't know why Mr. Gregory couldn't have directed the
conversation or comments so that each got equal time. Senator Gillibrand most certainly did not get the opportunity to counter Rep. Bachmann's
long-winded half truths and outright lies. I was very disappointed in the monitor's handling of this discussion. an apology should be extended to the Senator.
i have too agree with everyone here, Gregory, you are absolutely wrong for the way you let that go down, Bachmann did spout the same old denials they all have, even calling the senator a liar when you know dang good and well she was telling the truth(Sen. Gillibrand that is). You just let her, it was obviously a partisan effort to smear the president, I really thought i was watching Fox. Shame on you, thought you were supposed to be fair and honest.
I am so glad to see that Americans are shocked by how David Gregory simply handed his show over to M. Bachmann ... the right wing has NBC (all of them, really) bending over backward to do their bidding.
I will NOT continue to watch NBC, especially MEET THE PRESS, if this sort of unfairness continues.
As has been said here already, SHAME ON YOU NBC/DAVID GREGORY ..... how can you be so afraid of Rush Limbaugh and Fox News ???
Agree ..... I don't tune into MTP to see Michelle Bachmann take over as host ..... SHAME ON YOU NBC/DAVID GREGORY for bending to pressure from the right and giving up your commitment to fairness !!
I don't usually watch MTP anymore, but I thought I would tune in to hear these two Congresswomen. I wasn't surprised by anything from Rep. Bachmann, but I honestly thought that Sen. Gillibrand would be given something like equal time. David Gregory, who was supposed to be in charge of the show?? It certainly wasn't you. I used to respect NBC and Meet the Press. I will not waste my time with this program ever again.
I am a regular viewer of Sunday MTP. The reason being that in the past I felt that the show was ballanced and fair. This "Joint Interview" was a joke. There appeared to be no effort towards fair or ballanced. Mr.Gregory sat silent while Ms. Bachmann went on and on.
NBC/MTP you are now on my probation list. I will continue to seek multiple perspectives on political issues. If that can no longer be found on this program, I will go elsewhere.
I agree with the assessment of David Gregory's handling of the Bachman interview. It was little more than a non-stop propaganda speech. He gave Bachmann far more time and did not even ask her to stop interrupting the Senator.Bachaman claimed false statements from the senator without any real subatance and was never challenged by Gregory on her continuous stream of lies, exaggerations and contradictions.I doubt seriously if I will ever bother to watch anything hosted by Gregory again. He was totally pathetic. He has done this before many times. The Republican governor of Iowa was allowed to do the same thing as have other Republicans ,yet he really challenged Gietner during that segment of Sunday's show.He goes out of his way to let Republicans say almost anything with not a lot of challenge while being almost relentless with Democrats. He could have at least let the Senator have some time to counter Bachman's propaganda, since he was unwilling to do so.!
I am not convinced that David Gregory is a closet Republican shading interviews to the advantage of conservatives. I think he is just a wimp, unable to speak up in the face of aggressive guests who have been trained to butt in, to repeat canned remarks and dominate a conversation. But he does owe Gillibrand an apology for how badly he treated her on Sunday. When she tried to refute Bachmann, David actually stopped her and asked her to respond to some inane question of his instead. Meet the Press has come a long way - down - from the times when it made news with hard headed, informed questioning of prominent quests.
All of the above are correct. I've always had a tough time picking what to watch on Sunday morn as all of the current events interviews are on at the same time, and I like to receive a BALANCED APPROACH. The Apr. 15 MTP helped me out. I will cease watching MTP from now on after that sorry treatment of Sen. Gillibrand. Wonder why there is incivility in today's politics? Letting a rude person adding nothing to the conversation after her first 4-minute speech interrupt the polite participant over and over again is unforgivable!
Enough said. Inviting Bachmann on a show is the antithesis of enlightning conversation.
Shame on you David this is not the first time you've failed as a moderator on Meet The Press and you do no justice to Tim Russert's legacy.
David you should have done what the republicans do best INTERRUPT!!! Bachmann kicked your ass.
Savanna Guthrie is head and shoulders above David Gregory as a host of "Meet the Press"
Gregory was like Bambi in the headlights. He did react to to any of the outright lies
spewed by Bachman. Was Bachman as a guest Gregory's idea? What a joke. Gregory is no Tim Russert...that's for sure.
Savanna Guthrie for Moderator...!!
David Gregory is the worst host I have ever seen on any of the talk shows.
By the way David, the women's issues that people are talking about are:
Equal pay for equal work
Women having the right to choose
Woman having the right to contraception
Woman having the right to affordable health care
Funds for public schools
Pell grants for college
(all rejected by the republicans)
They are not talking about Romney's wife working hard as a mother...
Are you keeping up with the dialogue in this country? Doing any research for your
show? Doesn't seem like it...
I am in China teaching, and just today saw the Bachman-Gillibrand "discussion" of last Sunday. I was horrified by the way David was completely dominated and even appeared intimidated by Bachman, who rudely interupted, and talked on and on spewing campaign prattle. I kept thinking David would surely stop her, but it didn't happen. I agree completely with the person above who wrote that letting the rude person dominate the conversation with long-winded propaganda speeches, and interrupt the polite participant is unforgivable for a professional moderator. It is no doubt difficult to deal with aggressive guests, who I have noticed are almost always Republican, and who butt in, repeat canned remarks over and over and take over the show. But David Gregory needs to learn how to handle such people and take charge of the show or depart. We watch Meet the Press for reasonably balanced news, not to let the show be "used" by such people. David and MTP owe Sen. Gillibrand an apology, which I sincerely hope will be forthcoming.
I couldn't agree more with the sentiments expressed here. I still like David G and will watch MTP, but am extremeuty disappointed in how Ms. Bachman was NOT handled! I was shouting at my tv for her to shut up and let the Senator Gillibrand speak. The senator did not interrupt Ms Bachman even once!! This is how Republicans operate - shout louder and say it over and over until people start to believe it! The only way to satisfy me right now would be from MTP to have Sen Gillibrand on again.
