While the country’s attention is focused on Hurricane Irene preps (#1 on the tracker for all U.S. news stories) and Steve Jobs’s resignationas CEO of Apple (#2 on our U.S. News Tracker), we thought we’d take a look at what’s going on in the political world with our Political Trend Tracker.
The showdown between Texas Governor Rick Perry and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney tops our list this afternoon. NBC News reports that Romney is sticking with his running-against-Obama campaign strategy, but Perry hasn't been shy to attack Romney -- especially Romney's Massachusetts health care plan.
Number two on the Trend Tracker: Stories about Libya and its nuclear materials, and whether or not they are safe. The Associated Press reports the Obama administration is confident that Libya's nuclear materials are secure. Also showing up on the tracker: The weird news that embattled leader Moammar Gadhafi was obsessed with former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
Finally at number three, it’s Labor vs. Obama. Politico reports that "AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka told reporters that labor groups are planning to scale back their involvement with the Democratic Party in advance of the 2012 elections."
